The Crossing choir sets a record with Tenth GRAMMY® Nomination
The Crossing has received its tenth nomination for the GRAMMY® Award for Best Choral Performance, for their album Ochre, featuring the music of Ayanna Woods, George Lewis, and Caroline Shaw. The nomination puts Donald Nally and The Crossing in a singular category, now holding the record for the most consecutive years of nominations, previously held by American choral legend Robert Shaw. This is the ninth consecutive year the ensemble has been nominated.
The Crossing has won three GRAMMYs®, in 2018 (Gavin Bryars’ The Fifth Century), 2019 (Lansing McLoskey’s Zealot Canticles), and 2023 (Born – music of Edie Hill and Michael Gilbertson). The ensemble has also been featured on numerous GRAMMY®-nominated albums in other categories, including Julia Wolfe’s Fire in My Mouth with the New York Philharmonic, and John Luther Adams’ Sila: the breath of the world with Jack Quartet and Doug Perkins.
Highresaudio.com’s review of the album comments, “The performances on OCHRE are both rigorous and supple, moving from the intriguing, foggy textures of George Lewis to Caroline Shaw’s primarily wordless, quiet contemplation of the Earth, to Ayanna Woods’ inspired determination to live in a better world.”
Ochre was released on July 12, 2024, on Navona Records. It is available as a digital download and on streaming platforms. The Crossing's next recording, David Lang's poor hymnal, will be released on Cantaloupe Music on Friday, December 13.
The 67th GRAMMY Awards® will be announced Sunday February 2, 2025, at ceremonies in Los Angeles.
