A Medieval Christmas: Hodie Christus Natus Est
& A German Christmas: In Dulci Jubilo
For immediate release (Boston, MA) – This December, The Boston Camerata offers two holiday programs:
A Medieval Christmas: Hodie Christus Natus Est, a treasured annual tradition, touring Maine and Massachusetts December 5–8.
A German Christmas: In Dulci Jubilo coming to Cambridge, MA on December 22.
A Medieval Christmas: Hodie Christus Natus Est
Like the Camerata itself, one of these productions is celebrating an anniversary of its own. Fifty years ago, in our 1974–75 season, Camerata and its Director (now Director Emeritus) Joel Cohen first presented a new program entitled A Medieval Christmas. This would be recorded for the Nonesuch label and the vinyl would go on to become a runaway best-seller.
Under the direction of Anne Azéma, our A Medieval Christmas of today, showcasing the sounds of Christmas spirituality from Medieval France, Italy, England, and Provence, including music of the church and songs of private devotion around the joyous theme of the Nativity, differs in many ways from the 1970s production – – but the two programs remain close in their underlying spirit.
Don’t miss these chances to experience our recent Harmonia Mundi CD release, live and in-person, featuring a superb all-female ensemble of voices and instruments!
Our Damariscotta, ME performance is presented by the Lincoln Theater.
Our Belmont, MA performance is presented by the First Church in Belmont – Unitarian Universalist.
Ticketing information for all performances can be found on our website.

A German Christmas: In Dulci Jubilo
In the European North, the forests are deep; the nights are dark and long. Perhaps this is why, in reaction, the early Christmas music of the German-speaking peoples is so intensely joyful and profoundly rich. Our program explores the marvelous music of German Christmas festivity through chants and chorales, simple carols, grandiose polyphony, and instrumental fantasias of the 15th to early 17th centuries.
This program – with its large cast of five voices, organ, viola da gamba, harp, winds, and brass – is sure to lift spirits and brighten the dark winter days. We hope you join us this holiday season!
Tickets start at $28 for General Admission ($10 for students) and can be purchased via our website.
