SYBARITE5 IS NAMED ENSEMBLE-IN-RESIDENCE
AT SUNY PURCHASE
NEW YORK, NY–Sybarite5 is thrilled to announce that they have been named Resident Ensemble for the 2024-2025 academic year at SUNY Purchase where they will be working with student composers and performers under the leadership of Laura Kaminsky, head of the composition program. This collaboration will bring Sybarite5's innovative approach to classical music directly to Purchase students as well as the wider community.
Sybarite5, known for their eclectic repertoire and dynamic performances, will engage with the campus in multiple ways throughout the year. The ensemble will present a series of masterclasses for students, who will spend the year writing works for the group. In addition, Sybarite5 will offer concerts featuring these works as well as their signature repertoire at The Conservatory of Music Recital Hall, free and open to the public.
"We are delighted to welcome Sybarite5 as our Resident Ensemble," said Laura Kaminsky. "Their commitment to pushing musical boundaries aligns perfectly with Purchase's dedication to creativity and innovation in the arts."
The residency activities will kick off on October 30, 2024, with Sybarite5 working with composition and performance majors enrolled in Purchase New Music, taught by Kaminsky. Throughout the year, students will have multiple opportunities to work closely with the ensemble members, gaining invaluable insights into professional musicianship and entrepreneurship in the arts.
On December 4, 2024, the quintet will present a concert with these new student compositions featured along Sybarite5's genre-breaking blend of classical and contemporary pieces. The college as well as the broader community will have the rare opportunity to hear the ensemble showcase their unique sound and artistic vision. Dates for the spring 2025 events will be announced shortly.
Sybarite5's most recent album, Collective Wisdom, debuted at #1 on the Billboard Classical charts, showcasing the group's continued artistic growth and popularity. The album with works by Curtis Stewart, Micheal Gilbertson, Jessica Meyer, Jackson Greenberg, Pedro Giraudo, and Komitas received critical acclaim, including a five-star rating from BBC Music Magazine, further cementing Sybarite5's reputation as innovators in the classical music world.
"Sybarite5 is honored to be chosen as the Resident Ensemble at SUNY Purchase," said Louis Levitt, double bassist of Sybarite5. "We look forward to collaborating with the talented students and faculty, and to sharing our passion for music with the Purchase community."
This residency continues Purchase College's tradition of bringing world-class artists to campus, providing students with exceptional learning experiences and enriching the cultural life of the region.
