Pianist Clare Longendyke Releases Debut Album
“…of dreams unveiled”
With Works by Amy Williams, Anthony R. Green, and Claude Debussy
Available March 1, 2024
“Masterful… she fully captured the atmospheric quality of the music in a performance of great virtuosity and delicacy.” - Hyde Park Herald
Single | To Anacreon in the US | AVAILABLE NOW
Clare Longendyke, a pianist with “an artistic ferocity that captivated and astonished listeners” (Waverly Newspapers), will release her debut album “… of dreams unveiled”, on March 1, 2024. This album features commissioned works by Amy Williams (b. 1969) and Anthony R. Green (b.1984), alongside selections from Piano Preludes, Books I and II by Claude Debussy (1862-1918). Longendyke is committed to guiding audiences towards classical music’s more inclusive future by commissioning and performing new works by living composers alongside her favorite works from the past. Her artistic mission is “to expand the concert stage by illuminating the dark corners of classical music’s past where the work of female composers and composers of color is too often shelved.”
This album of solo piano repertoire is steeped in Debussy-an language, though the concept for the project did not begin with Debussy but with Amy Williams, whose work Longendyke champions. Williams’s Piano Portraits: Books I and II, composed in 2019-20, are inspired by the influential pianists in the composer’s life. Longendyke commissioned the Piano Portraits: Book II from Williams. Selections heard on the album from Piano Portraits include Olga, Yvar, Frieda, Nils, Helena, and Ursula.
Anthony R. Green's composition To Anacreon in the US (2019) acts as a postlude to Debussy’s prelude Feux d’artifice (1912-13). Using the American national anthem as its primary theme, Green’s piece teases apart the main melody, transforming and developing the music in Debussy-esque ways, all within a framework that ends this album with a bang. Two newly commissioned works are “Fugue — suivant ‘Des pas sur la neige’” (Album 1) written in 2022, which acts as a response to Debussy’s “Des pas sur la neige” prelude (1909-10), and “Fugue — suivant ‘Minstrels’” (Album 2) holds the place as a postlude to Debussy’s “Minstrels” (1909-10).
Longendyke is set to release the second part of the album in 2026. The album “...of dreams unveiled,” will be available on all major streaming platforms starting on March 1, 2024.
