Gil Rose, Boston Modern Orchestra Project, and Odyssey Opera Nominated 4th Time for Best Opera Recording Grammy
The Lord of Cries (Pentatone)
John Corigliano, composer; Mark Adamo, librettist; Gil Rose, conductor; Anthony Roth Costanzo, Kathryn Henry, Jarrett Ott & David Portillo; Gil Rose, producer, (Boston Modern Orchestra Project & Odyssey Opera Chorus)
Boston Modern Orchestra Project (BMOP) and Gil Rose present the world-premiere recording of The Lord of Cries, a breathtaking opera by John Corigliano and Mark Adamo. Telling the story of Euripides’s The Bacchae with the characters of Bram Stoker’s Dracula, the piece explores the power of sexual desire and humans’ need to blame and attack others for what they can neither resist nor accept in themselves. The brilliant cast—most of whom introduced their parts in the world premiere in 2021—is led by star countertenor Anthony Roth Costanzo in the title role.
This marks the fourth nomination in five years in the Best Opera Recording category for the Boston Modern Orchestra Project and Odyssey Opera: The Lord of Cries (2023), X: The Life and Times of Malcolm X (2022), The Trail at Rouen (2020), and Fantastic Mr. Fox (2019) **winner**.
Nomination quote from John Corigliano:
“Mark Adamo and I couldn’t be happier that the GRAMMYS has recognized the splendid work that conductor Gil Rose, his stupendous cast and orchestra, and his peerless engineers have put into making the recording of our opera THE LORD OF CRIES. I’ve had the privilege of collaborating on many, many records of my music over my six-decade career, and this is, far and away, one of the very finest.”

About Gil Rose
Gil Rose is one of today’s most trailblazing conductors, praised as “amazingly versatile” (The Boston Globe) with “a sense of style and sophistication” (Opera News). Equally at home performing core repertoire, new music, and lesser-known historic symphonic and operative works, “Gil Rose is not just a fine conductor, but a peerless curator, sniffing out—and commissioning—off-trend, unheralded, and otherwise underplayed repertoire, that nevertheless holds to unfailingly high standards of quality. In doing so, he’s built an indefinable, but unmistakable, personal aesthetic” (WQXR).
A global leader in American contemporary music, Grammy Award-winner Rose is the founder of the performing and recording ensemble the Boston Modern Orchestra Project (BMOP), who “bring an endlessly curious and almost archaeological mind to programming…with each concert, each recording, an essential step in a better direction” (The New York Times), as well as the founder of Odyssey Opera, praised by The New York Times as “bold and intriguing.” GilRoseConductor.com
