“Tradition and Beyond”

Breathtaking performance art created by the collaboration of

traditional sound and advanced imagery

Welcoming The Ukrainian Chorus Dumka of New York and praying for the sound of peace across borders

Hibiki's overseas debut performance promises a truly captivating experience, combining the enchanting melodies of Japanese and Western instruments with mesmerizing holographic visuals. As the audience enters the Rose Theater, they will be surrounded by the beauty of ukiyo-e prints, scenes from Noh plays, and cherry blossoms in full bloom, immersing themselves in a world of unique Japanese aesthetics.

Led by Ikuko Kawai, one of Japan's leading violinists and composers, Hibiki transcends the boundaries of genre and creates a truly one-of-a-kind symphony. Kawai’s ability to seamlessly fuse the traditional sounds of Japanese instruments with the familiar orchestral sounds of the West is a testament to her musicality and originality. Her approach to music transcends boundaries, creating a distinctive and “unframed” experience for her audience.

The historical significance of Japanese musical instruments, brought to Japan through the Silk Road, adds depth and richness to the performance. These instruments have evolved alongside traditional Japanese music forms such as Gagaku, Noh, and Kabuki.

The harmonious collaboration between a New York-based orchestra and Japanese instrumentalists represents a genuine cultural exchange, symbolizing a heartfelt connection between different cultures.

The staged imagery is by Taiki Ueda, a Japanese art director who has created images for Kabuki, TV dramas, and other productions.
