Summer 2023: Daniel Hope Releases Music for a New Century on Deutsche Grammophon (June 2), Tours Germany with New Century Chamber Orchestra (June 10–2
(May 2023)—On June 2, violinist Daniel Hope, lauded by San Francisco Classical Voice as a “master violinist and ‘musical activist’ in perpetual motion,” releases Music for a New Century on Deutsche Grammophon with New Century Chamber Orchestra, which is celebrating its 30th anniversary this season. Also featuring Ukrainian pianist Alexey Botvinov, the album comprises four works – three of them world premiere recordings – commissioned by the orchestra, alone or as part of a consortium, from Philip Glass, Tan Dun, Mark-Anthony Turnage and Jake Heggie. Hope and New Century also embark, in June, on their second European tour together since the violinist was appointed Music Director in 2018, performing in ten German cities (June 10–25). Destinations include the summer festivals of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Rheingau and Schleswig-Holstein, where Hope is currently in the midst of performing 50 programs as 2023’s featured artist, in celebration of his own 50th birthday.
Music for a New Century on DG (June 2)
Music for a New Century demonstrates the enthusiasm with which New Century is committed to new compositions and contemporary classical music. Hope explains:
"Spontaneously, you probably wouldn't associate these four composers with each other, but with this combination, we're celebrating the orchestra and its creative engagement with new music."
Philip Glass’s Third Piano Concerto, composed in 2017, was commissioned by pianist Simone Dinnerstein in partnership with a large consortium of orchestras, including New Century, which joined her for the West Coast premiere of the work in 2018. Returning to the piece this past January with Alexey Botvinov as soloist, the orchestra recorded it in a studio session at Stanford University’s Bing Concert Hall for release on this recording.
Botvinov also performs alongside Hope on Tan Dun’s Double Concerto for Violin, Piano and String Orchestra with Percussion, commissioned by New Century, Odessa Classics Festival, Istanbul Music Festival and Borusan Istanbul Philharmonic Orchestra and given its world premiere, again in Bing Concert Hall, by New Century in 2021. Hope has been collaborating for nearly a decade with the pianist, who serves as Artistic Director of the Odessa Classics Festival; they released an album of the music of Alfred Schnittke together in fall of 2021, followed by another last year comprising music of Ukrainian composer Valentin Silvestrov.
Hope and New Century round out Music for a New Century with Mark-Anthony Turnage’s Lament for Solo Violin and String Orchestra, commissioned by Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, Amsterdam Sinfonietta, New Century and NFM Leopoldinum Orchestra and given its U.S. premiere by Hope and New Century in 2021; and Jake Heggie’s Overture, commissioned by John and Paula Gambs for New Century’s musicians and Daniel Hope in celebration of the orchestra’s 30th anniversary season. The work’s world premiere was at the orchestra’s gala concert this past February.
European tour with New Century (June 10–25)
One of the world’s few conductorless ensembles, New Century embarks this summer on its second European tour since Hope became Music Director. Drawing on music from programs performed throughout the 2022-23 season, nine of the ten performances feature Botvinov and Hope in Tan Dun’s Double Concerto, and the rotating repertoire also includes iconic film music: Bernard Herrmann’s music from Hitchcock’s Vertigo and selected film scores by Ennio Morricone, both arranged by Paul Bateman; Gershwin’s American in Paris arranged by Clarice Assad; and John Williams’s “With Malice Toward None” from the film Lincoln. Max Richter’s Vivaldi: The Four Seasons – Recomposed; Britten’s Variations on a Theme of Frank Bridge; Duke Ellington’s “Sophisticated Lady”; and Kurt Weill’s Orchestral Suite from The Threepenny Opera.
Featured Artist at Schleswig-Holstein Festival 2023
Last fall, Hope was named the Featured Artist at the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, the largest classical music festival in Germany, for 2023. In celebration of the violinist’s 50th birthday year, 50 concerts are being programmed, and for the first time in its history the residency is taking place not only during the festival period in July and August but for the entire 2023 calendar year, from January to December. Marking the largest retrospective of Hope’s collaborative work to date, the concerts include a new commission, music and spoken word, chamber music and youth workshops. He performs at the festival this summer with New Century, NDR Radiophilharmonie, Schleswig-Holstein Festival Orchestra led by Christoph Eschenbach, SIGNUM Saxophone Quartet, amarcord vocal ensemble, Irish folk group Lúnasa and many more, with performances of his own programs including “AIR – A Baroque Journey,” “East meets West,” “IRISH ROOTS” and “America.”
