Thu-Sun Jun 1-4 George Coleman Quintet
George Coleman - tenor saxophone Peter Bernstein - guitar Tadataka Unno – piano John Webber – bass George Coleman Jr. – drums
“He’s still one of the most fluent and inventive tenor saxophonists around.” – The Guardian
Legendary tenor saxophonist George Coleman—a renowned performer and living legend—is no stranger to SMOKE Jazz Club. The NEA Jazz Master opened the club in 1999 and returned to christen its reopening in July 2022. This upcoming visit has Coleman at the helm of a special quintet that includes guitarist Peter Bernstein, bassist John Webber, and his drummer son George Coleman Jr. He is still making some of the most inspired music of his celebrated career, which has included work with B.B. King, Miles Davis, and Herbie Hancock, among many others. Originally from Memphis, Tennessee, the blues remains at the heart of Coleman’s harmonically advanced music. Downbeat reports, “When you hear the tenor sax of George Coleman, you know it’s him within a few notes. That deep park of a tone evokes a time and place—be it his historic work with Max Roach, Chet Baker, and Miles Davis, or as a leader in his own right.”
Wed Jun 7 Sean Mason Quintet Anthony Hervey – trumpet Chris Lewis – tenor saxophone Sean Mason – piano Felix Moseholm – bass Domo Branch – drums Pianist Sean Mason, an incredible new talent, leads his quintet with trumpeter Anthony Hervey, saxophonist Chris Lewis, bassist Felix Moseholm, and drummer Domo Branch. Mason states, “My purpose is to play dance music.” And his music has been described as highly melodic, swinging, gospel jazz. Combining folk, stride piano, and the style of his early hero Ray Charles, Mason creates music that is greater than the sum of its parts. Don’t miss this exciting, rising star musician. Thu-Sun Jun 8-11 Orrin Evans All-Star Quintet The Red Door record release Sean Jones – trumpet Gary Thomas – tenor saxophone Orrin Evans – piano Robert Hurst – bass Marvin “Smitty” Smith – drums “One hell of a jazz pianist.” – All About Jazz Pianist Orrin Evans celebrates the release of his exciting new album, The Red Door (SMOKE Sessions Records), leading an exceptional quintet featuring trumpeter Sean Jones, tenor saxophonist Gary Thomas, bassist Robert Hurst, and drummer Marvin "Smitty" Smith. Evans is a master at assembling inspired groups, and this one proves it again. The New York Timesreports, “Mr. Evans is a viable candidate for jazz’s most resourceful and invigorating contemporary pianist,” while WBGO Radio adds that he is “a highly esteemed pianist with post-bop dynamism in his bloodstream.”

Vincent Herring – alto saxophone Jeremy Pelt – trumpet James Carter – tenor saxophone Jeremy Pelt – trumpet Paul Bollenbeck – guitar David Kikoski – piano Essiet Essiet – bass Jeff “Tain” Watts – drums “Herring has firmly established himself as one of his generation’s masters.” – The New York City Jazz Record The fiery and soulful alto saxophonist Vincent Herring convenes a spectacular all-star octet featuring Jeremy Pelt, James Carter, Paul Bollenback, David Kikoski, Essiet Essiet, and Jeff “Tain” Watts. WNPR reports that “Herring fuses instrumental mastery with equal and unified parts of jazz’s holy trinity of heart, mind, and soul,” which is also a perfect description of this project. Something Else! was the only Blue Note album recorded by the great alto saxophonist Cannonball Adderley. Released in 1958, it became an iconic masterpiece for its blend of heart, mind, and soul. Something Else!, the band, takes its inspiration from this soul-warming music with new arrangements and original compositions in the same spirit.

The New York Timesdescribes Stallings as “polished, self-possessed and close to the ground, with blues and gospel language on simmer. And she’s a wizard of the long tone, which she uses to laser into deep emotional zones; she leaves brackets of silence, and phrases with microscopic care.” And, The Wall Street Journal adds that she is “our greatest living link to the late, great (Carmen) McRae.” Wed-Sun Jun 28-Jul 2 About SMOKE Located on Manhattan’s Upper West Side at the junction of Broadway and 106th Street (aka Duke Ellington Boulevard), Smoke Jazz Club is one of New York City’s premier live music venues.
