Founded in 2014 by Ukranian American businessman Dr. Michael Krasnyansky and international dancer and choreographer turned Artistic Director Gladisa Guadalupe, Cleveland Ballet in eight short seasons has established itself as a nationally renowned ballet company acclaimed for its commitment to innovation, diversity and creativity. One of the fastest growing companies in the nation, Cleveland’s resident ballet company, comprising thirty-two artists from all over the globe, is a smaller, more flexible company than most traditional ballet companies. Three years into the company’s career, Cleveland Ballet became the resident company of Playhouse Square, the largest theater district outside of New York.
The company, now in its eighth season, has developed a reputation for creating and sustaining traditions and cultivating appreciation for one of the most dramatic, elegant, and powerful art forms. Since its launch, Cleveland Ballet has commissioned seven ballets, one ballet score and Ms. Guadalupe has herself choreographed numerous new works for the company.
Cleveland Ballet has built upon the vision and business acumen of Adella Prentiss and impresario Giacomo Bernardi, who were instrumental in the development of Cleveland's dance audience. They were responsible for bringing Anna Pavlova, one of the world's foremost ballerinas of the 20th century, to the city, as well as the internationally famous Diaghilev Ballets Russes, which performed in Cleveland during their first U.S. tour.
Following a successful summer residency at Harbourtown Fine Arts Center in Vermillion, Ohio, Cleveland Ballet’s 2022-23 season offers performances of Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake, a sold-out tour of The Little Nutcracker at Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens in Akron, Ohio, and Tchaikovsky’s holiday classic The Nutcracker, to close out the first half of the season. Debuting in the new year is Momentum!, the company's debut at Florida’s Amaturo Theater at The Broward Center for the Performing Arts, a performance featuring two new works by Artistic Director Gladisa Guadalupe. In the spring, the company premieres George Balanchine’s Serenade,a staple of New York City Ballet's repertory with the world premiere of Symphony of Life, featuring Cleveland Ballet’s first commissioned musical score by world renowned Israeli composer Anna Segal, with choreography by critically acclaimed choreographer, Ilia Zhivoi. The production will feature the newly formed Cleveland Ballet Orchestra, a twenty-four piece group hand-picked by esteemed violinist and former Cleveland Orchestra assistant concertmaster Alexandra Preucil, led by conductor Caleb Young in their Playhouse Square debuts.
The company continues to advance its educational outreach initiatives to service area school children, partnering with Cleveland Metropolitan School District, the Cleveland Browns Foundation Stay in the Game! Network, the Cleveland Cavaliers Community Foundation, and Boys and Girls Club and Girl Scouts of America. This season, area youth will experience Swan Lake and The Nutcracker courtesy of Ohio Arts Council, Edwin D. Northup II Fund (a PNC Charitable Trust), and the Phyllis H. & William H.
