For immediate release - Teatro Nuovo announced today a performance of Rossini’s Maometto Secondo on Wednesday, Nov. 2 at the Rose Theater (Jazz at Lincoln Center). The performance will begin at 7 p.m., with a pre-opera lecture by General Director Will Crutchfield at 6 p.m. The opera, composed for Naples in 1820, is one of Rossini’s grandest. Teatro Nuovo’s production, originally programmed for July, had to be postponed due to a Covid-19 outbreak.
“We are thrilled to be back at work with this re-mount,” said Crutchfield in announcing the November performance. “Thanks to a Herculean effort on the part of our staff, singers, orchestra, and donors, we have regrouped almost the entire ensemble that reached the eve of dress rehearsals in July. This is an opera unlike any other, and our public needs the chance to hear it interpreted in Teatro Nuovo’s unique style.”
“It’s a big project,” said Executive Director Philip Pierce, “because we are bringing back our period-instrument orchestra from all over the world on short notice, but those of us who heard Maometto in rehearsals know that this amazing work justifies an extraordinary effort. The audience is in for an unforgettable evening.”
