For Immediate Release - ROCO kicks off their “Grateful” 18th Season with In Concert full-orchestra performances of a program entitled “Family” on September 23 at Miller Outdoor Theatre and September 24 at The Church of St. John the Divine. Artistic Partner Mei-Ann Chen leads the orchestra in a program inspired by community, family, and hope, honoring Houston’s cultural diversity. Juan Pablo Contreras’ Mariachitlán will feature Mariachi Imperial de America, a mariachi band that will perform before Contreras' mariachi-inspired piece for both concerts and for the ROCOrooters, while Ngo Hoang Quan’s orchestral setting of the Vietnamese folk song Bèo d?t mây trôi tells the story of longing to be reunited with missing loved ones. Grammy-nominated guitarist Mak Grgic features as soloist in the world premiere of Borders, a ROCO-commissioned guitar concerto by Michael Abels (composer for the Jordan Peele films Nope, Get Out and Us), which explores themes of strife and healing. Ludwig van Beethoven‘s dramatic Symphony No. 5, nicknamed the “Fate Symphony,” reminds us that our fate can be in our own hands, encouraging us to write our own stories.
Following the performance of “Family” September 24, ROCO’s 10th annual Revelry Gala is hosted by event sponsor Porsche River Oaks, presenting a unique experience in the newly- opened locale, including an intimate dinner joined by ROCO musicians.
“Family” will also be livestreamed free at ROCO.org, Facebook, YouTube, and A440.live.
