The 20th Santander International Competition begins with a high artistic level. On its 50th anniversary, musicians trained in different schools and pedagogical centres of great international prestige face an arduous competition to achieve the sought-after First Prize of Santander.

The task of awarding the prizes of the 20th Competition will be entrusted to an exceptional Jury of great international figures, with Joaquín Achúcarro, Spanish pianist recognised by UNESCO for his artistic work, as President; Claudio Martínez-Mehner, renowned German-Spanish soloist and piano pedagogue, and Rena Shereshevskaya, current professor at the École Normale de Musique de Paris Alfred Cortot and outstanding pianist, as Vice-Presidents. The rest of the jury will be made up of conductor Péter Csaba (France), and pianists Barry Douglas (United Kingdom), Akiko Ebi (Japan), Ana Guijarro (Spain), Hüseyin Sermet (Turkey) and Márta Gulyás (Hungary).

As guest artists, the Competition will have the Cuarteto Casals (for the Semi-final) and the Radiotelevisión Española Symphony Orchestra conducted by the Asturian maestro Pablo González in the Final. Furthermore, the winner of the first edition in 1972 (first edition of the Competition at a national level) and 1978 (at an international level), Josep Colom, will offer a commemorative concert on 24 July as a prelude to the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Santander International Piano Competition.

The Santander Competition awards important cash prizes, the recording of a CD for the Naxos label for the winner and the Canon Audience Award voted by the public of the final. The competition offers the winners of the most notable prizes performances in the halls that make up the international circuits, which constitutes a firm launch of their professional careers on an international level. In addition to the prizes awarded by the jury, there is also the Special Award for the Best Chamber Music Performer, which includes a concert with the Cuarteto Casals.

In this edition, the Santander International Piano Competition has the support of the main public institutions: Ministry of Culture and Sports (INAEM), Santander City Council and Regional Government of Cantabria.

The final rounds of the Competition are part of the 71st Santander International Festival and will be held, along with the previous rounds, at the Palacio de Festivales de Cantabria (Santander). For the Final, TVE is joining this sponsorship with the broadcasting of this phase on La 2, and on www.rtve.es of said phase and of the Awards Ceremony.
