For Immediate Release - New York, NY - Pathos Trio, a classical/contemporary instrumental trio consisting of percussionists Marcelina Suchocka and Felix Reyes, and composer/pianist Alan Hankers, are releasing their debut album, When Dark Sounds Collide, on March 18th, 2022 on Panoramic Recordings, an imprint of New Focus Recordings. This album features new works for piano and percussion by young, new music composers Evan ChapmanAlison Yun-Fei JiangAlyssa WeinbergFinola Merivale, and Alan Hankers.

Each of the five compositions on the album was commissioned and premiered exclusively by Pathos Trio as part of their initiative to create a strong, cross-genre program of music that combines contemporary classical aesthetics with the ensemble's interests in dark, heavy, dense sounds drawn from other genres of music such as alternative rock, cathedral music, minimalist music, electronic synth-wave, and more.

To enhance the experience, all the works on the album have an accompanying music video produced by Grammy-nominated film company Four/Ten Media. Anticipating that the future of the entertainment industry will be centered around media presentation and that the attention of today’s audiences are increasingly more tuned into visual-based media, these videos also make the album's works available to a much wider range of listeners spanning across multiple genres of music. Pathos Trio aims to create music videos for each newly commissioned work going forward.

The music videos for each piece have been released on Vic Firth and I Care If You Listen.

This album is a part of an over two-year-long project that started in early 2019, shortly after the formation of the ensemble in late 2018, and has involved close collaborations with each composer involved. The product of these works has been a result of countless workshop sessions in Brooklyn, NY and residencies at Avaloch Farm Music Institute, and has been supported in part by musical and cultural institutions such as New Music USAFoundation for Contemporary ArtsChamber Music America, and the New York State Council of the Arts.

Pathos is set to tour throughout the East Coast starting in Spring 2022 to promote the album, beginning with an album release concert at the New World Center in Miami Beach, FL on Monday, March 14th, 2022, at 7:30pm EST.

The tour continues at MISE-EN Place Greenpoint in Brooklyn, NY in May/June 2022 (exact date TBA), the DiMenna Center for Classical Music, New York, NY in December 2022 (exact date TBA), and virtual release concerts to be held shortly after their Miami show on both March 20th and March 27th at 7pm EST through Musicivic.

COMPOSER NOTES

Fiction of Light
“As both a visual and a musical artist, my compositions have always been equally influenced by my experiences with light & color in the physical world as they are by other works of music. Throughout the compositional process of this piece, I was inspired by Tacita Dean’s thoughts on the colors of magic hour and our physical relationship to those colors, and became increasingly interested in finding ways to similarly manipulate the color palettes of an acoustic ensemble.

The techniques I eventually settled on for the Pathos Trio entailed supplementing acoustic elements with subtle electronic ones, while leaving an aura of mystery for the listener as to how those electronic elements were being produced by not sending them directly into a traditional PA system but instead into the players’ instruments and handheld communication devices. This, I hope, creates a sonic world that is colorful in a way that feels as though it is full of reflections, and in which 'detail is secondary and focus is lost.'" - Evan Chapman (2020)

Prayer Variations
“Inspired by visits to cathedral spaces, Prayer Variations is a theme and variations based on a simple, prayer-like melody. Over time, the original prayer melody is varied and transformed. Music unfolds into a sonic experience in motion, journeying through an imaginary, sonorous, and vertical spatial entity.” - Alison Yun-Fei Jiang (2020)

Delirious Phenomena
“The title for Delirious Phenomena comes from the Surrealist idea of the paranoiac-critical method, a way of perceiving reality defined by Salvador Dali as the 'spontaneous method of irrational knowledge based on the interpretative-critical association of delirious phenomena.'

Works created with this method often involved hallucinations, optical illusions, and other multiple images. Focusing on a unified and shared setup, I wanted to have all members of the trio work together to manipulate the piano, discovering sounds in the spirit of this 'spontaneous method.'" - Alyssa Weinberg (2020)

oblivious / oblivion
“The terror of climate change is preoccupying so many of my thoughts and is, therefore, the focus of most of my current music. I am devastated at the loss of life that is occurring daily – humans and other species. I am angry at how little is still being done. Too many people are still oblivious, as our beautiful planet sinks into oblivion.” - Finola Merivale (2020)

Distance Between Places
"Distance Between Places was inspired by the relationship between the soundscape of a particular place and memory. Much of the work is comprised of individual musical streams that are independent in terms of rhythm, timbre, and expressive shape, but still, allow for an overall blending that results in a unified sonic picture. Similar to the amalgamation of independent sounds that one might associate with a busy city, these layers are too complex for us to recollect precisely, but we can bring to mind an abstraction of what we remember.

As the work unfolds, various layers emerge to the foreground to form distinct rhythmical sections that symbolize our remembering and reordering. In this way, the title of the work refers to the sounds of somewhere as it exists, and how our memory of that place changes over time." - Alan Hankers (2019)
