Virtual Summer Festival: David Shifrin’s final concert as Artistic Director, plus a family-friendly concert, Protégé artists, and Edgar Meyer

VIRTUAL SUMMER FESTIVAL WEEK 5: David Shifrin’s final concert as Artistic Director, plus a family-friendly concert, Protégé artists, and Edgar Meyer
(Portland, OR) July 16, 2020 – More than 25,000 people nationwide have joined Chamber Music Northwest (CMNW) for their free Virtual Summer Festival concerts – nearly twice the normal attendance of the entire annual in-person festival! The upcoming final week of the virtual festival features: a family-friendly presentation of Bruce Adolphe’s Marita and Her Heart’s Desire premiering 10 am Monday, July 20; a concert of performances by chamber music’s rising stars premiering 7 pm PT Monday, July 20; new exclusive performances from Edgar Meyer and friends premiering 7 pm PT Thursday, July 23; and David Shifrin’s final performance as CMNW Artistic Director premiering 7 pm PT Saturday, July 25 at CMNW.org and on Chamber Music Northwest’s YouTube channel. Concerts are available until 11:59 pm PT the day after the premiere.
Written specifically for young audiences new to chamber music, Bruce Adolphe’s Marita and Her Heart’s Desire premiering 10 am PT Monday, July 20 available all week through Sunday, July 26 at 11:59 pm PT. tells the magical, mysterious, and funny story of a girl who believes the moon can grant her heart’s desire. She sets off to talk to the moon and on her way, she is joined by a clarinet cat, a trombone rat, bassoon dog, and piccolo mouse. A concert activity guide with fun facts and activities for the adventurous young listener is available for download to accompany the concert.
Discover the next generation of classical music stars in this program of Ravel, Mozart, and Messiaen’s Quartet for the End of Time performed by Chamber Music Northwest Protégé Project artists and mentors premiering 7 pm PT Monday, July 20 available through 11:59 pm PT Tuesday, July 21. Chamber Music Northwest’s Protégé Project is a world-class professional residency for emerging professional musicians. Since its founding in 2010, Chamber Music Northwest’s Protégé Project has played a key role in launching the professional careers of dozens of America’s finest young chamber musicians.
In a new exclusive performance from his home in Nashville, TN premiering 7 pm Thursday, July 23 available through 11:59 pm PT Friday, July 24, Grammy Award-winning bassist and composer Edgar Meyer and his family and friends will treat us to an evening of classical and crossover music, including a world premiere composed by his son and CMNW Protégé George Meyer.
In his final performance as Chamber Music Northwest Artistic Director, David Shifrin will treat us to the world premiere of a new clarinet solo written for him by David Ludwig and revisit great performances of Bach’s Concerto for Violin and Oboe in C Minor with solos by oboist Allan Vogel and violinist Soovin Kim and more in a concert premiering 7 pm PT Saturday, July 25 available through 11:59 pm PT Sunday, July 26.
David Shifrin has served as Artistic Director of Chamber Music Northwest since 1980. After this year’s Summer Festival, he will pass the baton to successors Gloria Chien and Soovin Kim. “I have collaborated with both Gloria and Soovin on many occasions,” says David Shifrin “I am very proud to have performed at the first Lake Champlain Chamber Music Festival [founded and lead by Soovin Kim] and first season of String Theory in Chattanooga [founded and lead by Gloria Chien]. I brought Gloria to Chamber Music Northwest as a Protégé Project artist and Soovin to the Chamber Music Society Two program at Lincoln Center. Gloria and Soovin have become an amazing force in service of the future of chamber music. I am confident they will bring the greatest music and finest musicians to Portland for years to come.”
A formal, in-person celebration of David Shifrin’s legacy is planned for summer 2021. Details to come.
