Grieg's 'Holberg Suite' was composed in 1884 to celebrate the bicentenary of the birth of noted Norwegian playwright and satirist, Ludwig Holberg. Composed in the Baroque dance-suite style of Holberg's time, Holberg Suite stands today as one of the earliest examples of neo-classicism in the Romantic Era. The great pianist, Josef Lhevinne, pften played the works by Schutt and Balakirev. He taught Adele Marcus, Mr. Biegel's teacher at The Juilliard School. Prior to his studies with Adele Marcus, Mr. Biegel studied from age 10-16 with American pianist, Morton Estrin, who introduced Rachmaninoff's work on this program to his student, Jeffrey Biegel.
