THE ALBUM
Following the critical success of their debut album Resurrection, the 12 ENSEMBLE release their second album Death & the Maiden on Schubert's birthday January 31, 2020. With their own arrangement of Schubert’s iconic string quartet at its heart, the record features a new commission from the newly-appointed Royal Opera House Composer in Residence Oliver Leith, alongside a poignant work by Tavener and a tribute to the ensemble's time in Iceland with a heart-felt arrangement of a song by Sigur Rós.
Back in 2016, the ensemble was lucky enough to visit Iceland for an artistic residency in the remote eastern fjord town of Seyoisfjorour. Both the sheer natural beauty and elemental power of our surroundings, coupled with the openness and generosity of the people we met, had a deep and lasting effect on us. In memory of our time there, the ensemble came up with this string arrangement of the song ‘Fljótavík” by Icelandic band Sigur Rós. We’ve performed it ever since and audiences always come up and tell us how moving they find it, so we’ve decided to commit it to record. Aside from being a beautiful piece of music that lends itself perfectly to string playing, the original lyrics to the song really resonated with our own experiences of being in Iceland.- Max Ruisi – co-founder the 12 ensemble
