On Clara Schumann’s 200th birthday, September 13, 2019, little was said about this most remarkable woman. Most media releases focused on Beethoven's upcoming 250th, and there was even media about Leopold Mozart, whose 300thbirthday was on 14 November. Yet, there is great reason to celebrate Clara Schumann. Not only as a great pianist and composer, but as a mother, muse and maverick woman. And the timing is right. Impeachment might get under Trump's skin. But Clara would get him tor resign. She had that kind of power over men.
Having recorded Clara’s Lieder together with the Brahms Symphonies in 2013 and 2014 conductor and pianist John Axelrod came up with a very original and clever initiative. He got the rights back from Telarc for the Schumann songs with Felicity Lott (her last recording), Indra Jones, Nicole Cabell and Wolfgang Holzmair (Axelrod himself is at the piano).
