The Chelsea Music Festival Announces 2019 Program: “10th Season | 200° due Clara?”

New York City— From June 6-15, 2019, the Chelsea Music Festival celebrates its tenth season with the theme "200° due Clara" inspired by the 200th anniversary of the birth of Clara Schumann. The Festival honors the legacy and contributions of a pioneering performer, caring collaborator, and artistic confidant through events highlighting the performing, visual, and culinary arts. Events will take place over ten days in June throughout the Chelsea neighborhood of NYC and feature classical, jazz, and contemporary music in evening concerts, lectures, walking tours, and family events.

To mark Clara Schumann’s anniversary, the Festival will feature The Clara Schumann Ten, a distinguished group of female composers. Music will include New York and World premieres by our 2019               Composers-in-Commission Jane Antonia Cornish, Helen Grime, Binna Kim, Jessica Mays, Santa Ratniece, Kathryn Salfelder, Aigerim Seilova, Nicky Sohn, Augusta Read Thomas, and Liliya Ugay. The composers will be responding to inspirations including visual art exhibitions, poetry, and letters and text from Clara Schumann’s life.

New venue partners in Chelsea join the Festival’s roster this season:

2019 Visual Artist-in-Residence Julianne Swartz will exhibit “Sounding Body/Listening Body”  at High Line Nine throughout the full month of June and will also collaborate with Festival Artists in a Festival Event at the gallery on June 13th. 

The Festival partners with the esteemed gallery Hauser & Wirthto host a performance on June 14th inspired by artwork of renowned artist Lorna Simpson and featuring new music by composer Jessica Mays. 

The Festival partners with Steinway Hall to mount the world-touring exhibition BTVN on Tour as a lead up to 250th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth in 2020

 

The Festival is thrilled to welcome and collaborate with its international partners:

Tokyo Bunka Kaikan has been invited to send four winners (two violinists, one violist, one cellist) from its Tokyo Music Competition to participate in the Festival this summer.

Beethoven Haus & Indiana University, will underwrite the residency of the Eurus String Quartet              from the Jacobs School of Music.  
 

To complete the Festival motto of Hear | Taste | See , the Festival will partner with Outstanding in the Field to host the Festival’s first outdoor family-style pre-concert dinner on the lawn of General Theological Seminaryon June 12th; chef Silvia Barban of LaRina Pastificio & Vino will showcase her talents. Culinary Artists-in-Residence, Sawako Okochi and Aaron Israel of Shalom Japan, will curate special menus on the Festival theme at St. Paul’s German Church for Opening night on Friday June 7th and for Saturday June 15th, which will be the Festival’s Tenth Season All-Star Jazz Finale featuring John Patitucci, Rogerio Boccato, Aaron Diehl, and Helen Sung.

Hailed by The New York Times  as a “gem of a series,” the Chelsea Music Festival exists to celebrate great music by bringing together world-leading musicians and exciting newcomers to the international stage.
