Soprano Denise Young to Appear in Recital at Subculture, May 1, 2019

The gifted American soprano Denise Young will appear in recital, Wednesday evening, May 1, 2019, 7:30 pm at SubCulture (45 Bleecker St, New York, NY 10012). She will perform works from her 2018 album, Denise Young, Soprano, with pianist Daric V. Jackson, bassist Noah Garabedian, drummer Leon Joyce Jr., and vocals John James and Lajuan Carter-Dent. The program will include Songs of Form, co-composed by Ms. Young and pianist Thomas Nickell, featuring words of Ralph Waldo Emerson and James Baldwin, which just received its world premiere at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall in April 2019.

Soprano Denise Young is passionate about the human experience in song. Her repertoire spans string quartets, symphonies, jazz quartets, professional chorales and solo recitals, and she is known to blend opera, jazz, gospel and classical hues in her performances.

Ms. Young has collaborated with notable musicians such as Grammy-award winning artist Larnelle Harris, Phillip Bailey of Earth Wind and Fire, Grammy-award winning trumpeter and composer Terence Blanchard, as well as with Colorado Symphony and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.

Her first recording, Denise Young, Soprano, a multi genre musical narrative, produced by jazz greats Tuck and Patti Andres under the Blue Organza Productions label was released in October 2018; the CD features performances by Grammy-award winning trumpeter and composer Terence Blanchard, Def Poetry artist Sekou Andrews, renowned jazz duo Tuck Andress on guitar, Patti Cathcart Andress and John James on background vocals, and Juan Escovedo on percussion.

Lauded as the “most powerful black woman in Silicon Valley” by Noah Kulwin from Vice News (November 17, 2017), Denise Young has recently retired from her twenty-two year position as the head of Global Human Resources for the Apple Corporation, and choose to pursue her passion for music. She makes her home in the Bay Area.
