Dan Locklair’s Requiem and Gloria Performed by St. John's Episcopal Church Choir, with Orchestra, Brass Octet and Soloists on Nov 2 in Roanoke, VA

October 31, 2018

Two of Dan Locklair's major choral works, Requiem and Gloria, will be performed on Friday, November 2 @ 6 PM by the St. John's Episcopal Church choir in Roanoke, Virginia, conducted by the composer, with orchestra, brass octet and guest soloists. This performance is the annual All Saints Memorial Concert, part of St. John’s Music on the Corner series, in its 19th year (the church is located on the corner of Elm and Jefferson in downtown Roanoke).

The church will host a talk and Q&A with Dr. Locklair at 4:30 p.m., prior to the performance. On October 27, they will also host an open rehearsal with Dr. Locklair, choir and instrumentalists.

Guest artists for the concert will be soprano Sarah Wiley Newcomb, contralto Kari DeBlasio Grim, bass Chase Peak and tenor Andrew Miller. String, brass and percussion instrumentalists will be joined by St. John's minister of music David Charles Campbell at the organ.

Requiem for SATB chorus (divisi), SATB soloists and organ was primarily composed between commissions over a two year period of time (2012-2014), in memory of the composer’s parents. It is in nine movements that alternate chorus and organ-accompanied vocal solo movements. Elements of the traditional Latin Requiem Mass are present: 1. Introit & Kyrie, 3. Sanctus-Benedictus, 4. Pie Jesu, 5. Agnus Dei, 7. Lux aeterna and 9. Paradisum. In addition, three non-traditional solo movements use texts from Biblical scripture. Read Locklair’s notes at http://www.locklair.com/compositions/choral/requiem. The piece was recorded by The Choir of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church and members of the Winston-Salem (NC) Symphony.

Gloria, for SATB choir, divisi, brass octet and percussion was commissioned in 1998 by the Choral Art Society (Portland, Maine) for a December 1999 World Premiere in Portland. It is dedicated to the board, members and Music Director (Robert Russell) of the Choral Art Society. Set in Latin, the piece uses the traditional Gloria in excelsis text which begins with the Biblical words found in Luke 2:14. This ancient canticle is known both as the Greater Doxology and, because of its opening sentences, as “the angel’s song.” Read the composer's notes about Gloria at http://www.locklair.com/compositions/choral/gloria. It has been recorded for the Convivium label.

The November 2 concert is free and open to the public. For more information, contact St. John's Episcopal Church at 540-343-9341 or visit https://www.facebook.com/events/409462049585511/.
