Carpe Diem String Quartet Cellist Carol Ou Stepping Down
A Message from the Members of the Carpe Diem String Quartet:
Carol Ou has recently informed us of her plans to step down as a quartet member this season. We respect her decision and support her. The search process is already in motion to find a new cellist for Carpe Diem. As we move through the search, you’ll likely be seeing some wonderful new cellists appearing on our concert season calendar.
Carol has been a tremendous asset to our quartet and to our endeavors in Columbus and beyond, and we will miss her spirit and musicianship. Please join us in thanking Carol for her 6 wonderful years with us. ~Chas, Amy, Korine
Carol has asked us to forward the following message to you all.
Dear friends,
Warm greetings from Boston! I wanted to let you know that after 6 years of highly creative and meaningful collaborations with my colleagues in the Carpe Diem String Quartet, I have decided to step away from the rigors of quartet life. My desire is to spend more time with my children and to live without future regrets about family life. My friends in the CDSQ were gracious enough to accept my resignation, and I leave in peace, knowing how much we had accomplished together in the last 6 years.
Looking back, I rest in the fact that more concert goers, presenters, and educators in the US, Asia, and Europe now know about the uniqueness of CDSQ - about the brilliance of our performances and the diversity of our repertoire. We gave many memorable concerts, including a transformative debut concert at Carnegie, and brought joy to countless music lovers everywhere. The exuberance of our dynamic foursome will continue to live on in the many recordings we have made during this time. Although performers don’t usually talk much about community service work, I am so proud to have been a part of a quartet whose mission to serve those who are less fortunate is truly genuine. Some of my happiest memories were spent helping to generate and deliver thoughtful and innovative outreach programs to schools and different care facilities all over this beautiful country. With our current visibility in the performing world, I know that it shouldn't be hard for CDSQ to attract excellent cellists who would wish to continue and contribute to the worthy missions of the quartet. Although it is likely that I will still play a few concerts with the quartet through part of this season, it may be that I will not be the cellist to see you in Columbus, as it is in the best interests of the quartet to have as much time as possible to get to know new cellists on tour and especially at the quartet home. I ask for your continuing enthusiasm and support for Chas, Korine, and Amy during the coming months of transition. I will truly miss you all as friends whose stimulating conversations and numerous acts of kindness of generosity have made my every visit to Columbus beautiful, special, and worthwhile.
With gratitude and affection,
Carol Ou
