IMMEDIATE RELEASE April 27, 2017 THE 61st GENERAL ASSEMBLY of the ?WORLD FEDERATION OF INTERNATIONAL MUSIC COMPETITIONS (WFIMC) comes to MONTRÉAL, MAY 11 - 14, 2017

The World Federation of International Music Competitions (WFIMC) is proud to announce that the 61st General Assembly will be held May 11 - 14, 2017 in Montréal, Canada. Founded in 1957, the WFIMC is the premiere governing body of the world’s music competitions. Based in Geneva, the WFIMC is a network and advocacy organization, representing the interests of 120 of the world’s leading music competitions.

Each year, the WFIMC General Assembly is co-presented by one of its member competitions. In 2017, the highly regarded Concours musical international de Montréal (CMIM) will host the events. Over seventy international delegates representing competitions from across five continents will gather for four comprehensive days of keynote addresses, plenary and networking sessions, culminating with the celebration of the 15th Anniversary Gala Concert of the Concours musical international de Montréal on Friday, May 12 at Maison Symphonique.

"It is with great pleasure and pride that CMIM hosts the 61st General Assembly in the year that we celebrate our 15th Anniversary – in the same year as Montréal observes the 375th anniversary of it's founding, and Canada marks its 150th birthday! Amidst all these celebrations, we will together discover a bright new star of the international piano world," declared Mr André Bourbeau, President, CMIM.

“The WFIMC is thrilled to share in Montréal’s multiple celebrations. Canada’s enlightened history reflects WFIMC’s multi-cultural, global membership and our organization’s commitment to fellowship across multiple borders. The 61st General Assembly will be a significant milestone in our shared history of music making through the spirit of competition,” said Mr. Benjamin Woodroffe, Secretary-General, WFIMC.

In 2017 the General Assembly welcomes the keynote address from French-Canadian film director and screenwriter François Girard, who first attracted international acclaim through his film “Thirty-two Short Films about Glenn Gould.” The annual assembly of the WFIMC allows members to share the accomplishments, debate the challenges experienced by music competitions today and participate in the verve of Montréal’s cultural life. As part of its code of protocol, the 2017 General Assembly will also consider eight new applications to join the Federation.

The 15th Anniversary Gala Concert (CMIM) welcomes distinguished guests including the Mayor of Montréal Mr. Denis Coderre, celebrity musician Mr Robert Charlebois, members of the Board of WFIMC, Assembly delegates, and 200 representatives from Orchestras Guild and Orchestras Canada. The concert features a performance of the 2017 First Prize winner of CMIM, with special guest appearances by previous CMIM winners including Canadian soprano Measha Bruggergosman (2002), Ukrainian pianist Serhiy Salov (2004), and American violinist Benjamin Beilman (2010). ____________________________________________________________________________________________ THE WORLD FEDERATION OF INTERNATIONAL MUSIC COMPETITIONS
