Nominations Sought for 2014 Michael Ludwig Nemmers Prize in Music Composition
The Michael Ludwig Nemmers Prize in Music Composition honors classical music composers of outstanding achievement who have significantly influenced the field of composition. The Prize includes a cash award of $100,000, a performance by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and a two-year residency of four non-consecutive weeks at the Bienen School of Music.
Nominations for the prize are reviewed by a selection committee whose members are highly recognized members of the music community. The prize will be awarded without regard to citizenship or institutional affiliation. Previous winners of the Nemmers Prize include John Adams (2004), Oliver Knussen (2006), Kaija Saariaho (2008), John Luther Adams (2010), and Aaron Jay Kernis (2012).
The Michael Ludwig Nemmers Prize in Music Composition is made possible through a generous gift from the late Erwin E. Nemmers and Frederic E. Nemmers, who in 1994 also enabled the creation of the Erwin Plein Nemmers Prize in Economics and the Frederic Esser Prize in Mathematics. Both are leading awards in their fields.
Nominations for the 2014 prize are open through February 1, 2014, and preferably should be submitted by recognized experts in the music profession. The nomination should describe the nominee's accomplishments and qualifications in no more than two pages. Inclusion of a resumé is encouraged but not required. Self-nominations will not be accepted, and former or present members of the Northwestern University faculty or employees of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra are ineligible. The 2014 winner will be announced in late spring.
