About the Competition

The unique structure of the Competition (it takes place in different countries each year, increasing its accessibility to talented musicians from all over the world), its ties with the world-renown International Tchaikovsky Competition (the winners of the youth Tchaikovsky Competition are invited to participate in the adult Competition), the large number of contestants and their high performing mastery, the level of required competition repertoire, the authoritative Jury Panel consisting of the past Tchaikovsky Competition laureates, and the great interest of the public and mass media?all of these make the Competition one of the most reputable international music competitions for young musicians. The first competition was arranged in Moscow between June 14 and July 30, 1992; the second, third, fourth and fifth competitions were held in Sendai (Japan, 1995), St. Petersburg (Russia, 1997), Xiamen (China, 2002), and Kurashiki (Japan, 2004), respectively. The Competition was created after the idea of Mr. Andrey Scherbak, General Director of the Association of Tchaikovsky Competition Stars and the exclusive organizer of the Competition. The main purpose of the Competition is education of young musicians. In preparation of the Competition, they learn the required competition repertoire, which becomes a basis of their artistic mastership. During the Competition, talented young musicians are able to demonstrate their artistic mastery to a large audience (the competition auditions in Moscow, Sendai and St. Petersburg were attended by more than one hundred thousand persons), to expose themselves to interpretation of other contestants, and to receive opinions of the authoritative musicians and critics on their performances.

The Competition has introduced successful professional careers to its young participants. Following are the first-prize winners from the past competitions: Emily Shea (pf, USA, 1992), Jennifer Kho (vn, USA, 1992), Daniel Muller-Shott (vc, Germany, 1992), Lang Lang (pf, China, 1995), Piotr Kwasny (vn, Poland, 1995), Monika Leskovar (vc, Croatia, 1995), Sergei Basukinsky (pf, Russia, 1997), Kong Zui Buy (vn, Vietnam, 1997), Bong Ihn Koh (vc, Korea, 1997), Haochen Zhang (pf, China, 2002), Ziao-yu, Yang (vn, China, 2002), Bonian Tian (vc, China, 2002), Yulia Chaplin (pf, Russia, 2004), Ailen Pritchin (vn, Russia, 2004), and Fedor Amosov (vc, Russia, 2004).
