SF Mayor Proclaims 'MTT Way'

October 25, 2023 | By Edward Edgerton, Musical America

The lasting impact of Michael Tilson Thomas on the city of San Francisco will be publicly displayed with the designation of “MTT Way” to one of the four streets surrounding Davies Symphony Hall-- the block of Grove Street between Franklin Street and Van Ness Avenue that marks the entrance to the box office.

On Oct. 21, at the second of his three weekend concerts conducting the orchestra in Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9, SF Mayor London N. Breed appeared on stage to announce the proposed renaming. Once approved by the Board of Supervisors, the sign displaying “MTT Way” will hang underneath the official Grove Street sign.

“The story of the classical music, arts, and culture scenes in San Francisco is intertwined with the artistic journey of Michael Tilson Thomas,” said Mayor Breed. “Today, we not only recognize him as a vital part of the cultural makeup of the City, we also celebrate the fact that he has been San Francisco’s proud ambassador on the world stage.”
