Meadowmount School of Music Presents 2026 Gurrena Fellow Hiu Sing Fan in Three-City Recital Tour This November

Hong Kong violinist performs in Madison, WI and at The Mansion at Strathmore before closing the tour at Carnegie Hall's Weill Recital Hall on November 15

Westport, NY – Meadowmount School of Music presents Hong Kong violinist Hiu Sing Fan, recipient of the fourth annual Gurrena Fellowship, in a three-city recital tour this November. Presented as part of his Fellowship year, the tour opens at the Friday Noon Musicale at the First Unitarian Society of Madison in Madison, WI (November 6), continues at The Mansion at Strathmore in North Bethesda, MD (November 7), and culminates at Carnegie Hall's Weill Recital Hall in New York City (November 15). Fan is joined by pianist Cameron Akioka, his friend and colleague at Northwestern University, with whom he has collaborated regularly for the past two years. The duo will also release an all-Schumann recording in 2027.

Named the 2026 Gurrena Fellow in October 2025, Fan received $50,000 in support including mentorship, continued training with Meadowmount faculty, and featured concert engagements tailored to his artistic aspirations. Having performed in the first half of the year in Westport, NY and the surrounding Meadowmount community, the recital tour marks the culmination of Hiu's featured Gurrena Fellow engagements.

For the tour, Fan has built a program of fantasy and imagination, stepping away from the traditional recital format with repertoire that ranges from Milstein's Paganiniana to Messiaen's Theme and Variations, and Schumann’s Sonata No. 2 in D Minor.

“For these concerts, I wanted to build a program full of fantasy and imagination, bringing together works that each mean something deeply personal to me,” said Hiu Sing Fan. I hope audiences will discover something unexpected and leave feeling moved and touched by what they've heard.”

Fan was most recently a semi-finalist in the 2025 Premio Paganini International Violin Competition and is the Second Prize and Audience Choice Award winner at the 2025 Dallas International Violin Competition. Fan holds degrees from The Juilliard School and the Hochschule für Musik und Theater München in Germany and is currently pursuing his Doctor of Musical Arts degree at Northwestern University under Gerardo Ribeiro, where he also teaches undergraduate violinists.

About Hiu Sing Fan
Hong Kong violinist Hiu Sing Fan ranked among the top six at the 2025 Premio Paganini and the 2024 George Enescu International Violin Competition. Praised by The Dallas Morning News for his “cool refinement and fine focus,” he is also the Second Prize and Audience Choice Award winner of the 2025 Dallas International Violin Competition and the 2026 Guerrena Fellow of the Meadowmount School of Music.

As a soloist, Fan has performed with Camerata Salzburg, the Hong Kong Sinfonietta, and the Dallas Chamber Symphony, and has served as Guest Concertmaster of the Cologne Chamber Orchestra in Germany. He has appeared at international festivals including the Verbier Festival, Meadowmount School of Music, Marvão Music Academy, Verão Clássico, and the Great Mountains Music Festival and School.

Fan has worked with artists including Leonidas Kavakos, Nikolaj Szeps-Znaider, Ferenc Rados, Aaron Rosand, Quatuor Ébène, and the Emerson String Quartet, and has performed under the batons of Christoph Poppen, Peter Bay, and Wing-Sie Yip.

Fan studied at The Juilliard School with I-Hao Lee and Hyo Kang, where he was the recipient of the Cordelia Lee Beattie Foundation Scholarship and the Betty and Daniel Bloomfield Fund Scholarship. He earned his Master’s and Artist Diploma degrees at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater München, studying with Julia Fischer, Christoph Poppen, and Lena Neudauer. He is currently pursuing his Doctor of Musical Arts degree at Northwestern University under Gerardo Ribeiro, while maintaining active teaching responsibilities at the Bienen School of Music.

About the Gurrena Fellowship
The Gurrena Fellowship was established in 2022 in memory of David A. Barnebl, an educated and passionate music lover, by his wife Linda Gurrena Barnebl of Shelburne, VT. The purpose of the Fellowship is to support and encourage exceptional young artists as they embark on their professional journeys.

The $50,000 Fellowship provides recipients with financial support and mentorship, featured concert engagements supported by Meadowmount School of Music, and continued collaborations and training with Meadowmount faculty throughout the Fellowship year and the following summer session.

Meadowmount School of Music in Brief
Founded in 1944 by legendary violin teacher Ivan Galamian, the Meadowmount School of Music is a seven-week summer program for violinists, violists, and cellists. Musicians ages 10 to 30 from around the world gather at the school's campus in the Adirondack Mountains of northern New York to immerse themselves in intensive study and artistic growth.
