Five performances this fall bring landmark works to life through the collaborators and artist who carry their legacy forward including the Miles Davis Estate's official two-night centenary celebration; So Percussion honors Steve Reich's 90th birthday with Drumming; Sandbox Percussion returns to 92NY to perform Andy Akiho's Seven Pillars; and Les Arts Florissants makes its 92NY debut with all-Monteverdi program 

NEW YORK, NY — This fall, The 92nd Street Y, New York (92NY) presents five performances united by a single idea: music arrives through the people who carry each work's legacy forward. Spanning four centuries — from Monteverdi's 17th-century madrigals to the twin legacies of Miles Davis — each program is led by collaborators of the artist who created the work, or by performers recognized as the work's definitive modern interpreters.

The Miles Davis Estate's official centenary celebration is a highlight of 92NY's season, featuring two exclusive New York performances. On October 16, the Kind of Blue Band celebrates Davis' acoustic years, centering on what is widely regarded as the greatest jazz album ever recorded, Kind of Blue. The Kind of Blue Band is anchored by trumpeter Eddie Henderson, whose artistry is strongly influenced by Davis, who he got to know as a teenager. Henderson will play alongside saxophonists Javon Jackson and Donald Harrison, pianist Orrin Evans, bassist Buster Williams and drummer Willie Jones III. The band treats Kind of Blue not as a museum piece but rather as a living work, carrying forward Miles' own spirit of reinvention.

The celebration continues on October 17 with the Miles Electric Band (M.E.B.), featuring music from Davis' boundary-breaking fusion era as heard on landmark albums like Bitches Brew. M.E.B. is led by Davis' nephew, longtime collaborator and drummer Vince Wilburn Jr., and features a multigenerational lineup of musicians who worked with Davis, including guitarist Jean-Paul Bourelly, keyboardist and musical director Robert Irving III, bassist Darryl Jones, and percussionist Munyungo Jackson. The group also features trumpeter Keyon Harold, saxophonist Antoine Roney, keyboardist Greg Spero, percussionist Rasaki Aladokun and the prolific DJ Logic. Together, these two nights offer a rare chance to experience the defining eras of Miles Davis's career through those who carry his legacy forward, while bringing their own artistry to music that helped define jazz itself.

On October 28, 92NY celebrates the 90th birthday of American composer, Steve Reich with a special performance of the landmark minimalist masterpiece Drumming by the Grammy Award-winning ensemble So Percussion. Reich’s study of Ghanaian drumming that inspired this 1971 work created a new American musical language, helping to establish minimalism as something physical, hypnotic, and communal, and influenced genres from electronic music to rock.

On November 7, Sandbox Percussion returns to 92NY with Seven Pillars, the evening-length suite for percussion quartet by GRAMMY®-nominated, Pulitzer Prize finalist composer Andy Akiho. Akiho wrote the piece specifically for Sandbox Percussion in 2021; it has since toured internationally, including a sold-out run at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris, and was praised by The New York Times as "a lush, brooding celebration of noise" and "as pure as music gets."

On November 11, Les Arts Florissants makes its 92NY debut with a program of Monteverdi's madrigals, under the direction of William Christie, who founded the pioneering period-instrument ensemble in 1979, and Paul Agnew. The program includes the soprano solo "Lamento della Ninfa" and "Si ch'io vorrei morire," bringing new color to 400-year-old works.
