San Francisco – Award-winning contemporary music group Ensemble for These Times is excited to announce its 19th Home Season featuring the start of an exciting new two-year initiative, “The HOME Project,” exploring the meaning of home. Innovation, diversity and collegiality continue to mark E4TT’s programming, beginning with the Home Season’s opening concert, “Call for Scores: Solo Piano, Vol. 3,” performed by E4TT emerita pianist extraordinaire Dale Tsang on October 18 at the Community Music Center in San Francisco and October 25 at the Berkeley Piano Club; and next on November 15, 2026, by “Exile | Banishment | Home” at O1C in SF. The new year will start with “Hollywood Exiles & Modern Noir” on January 24, at the Piedmont Piano Company in Oakland; “HOME,” the season’s title program – E4TT’s seventh multimedia collaboration with the SF Conservatory of Music, with four World Premieres by emerging composers Zoe Yost, Max Marcus, Max Tafoya, and the winner in the E4TT/SFCM multimedia student composition competition – on April 9, and the season will close on May 15, at the Center for New Music in SF, with “Inspiración: Music by Women and Nonbinary Composers,” the eighth edition of E4TT’s popular annual series. All concerts will be offered in hybrid format for both in-person and livestream attendance.

 

ABOUT ENSEMBLE FOR THESE TIMES

Winner of The American Prize in 2021 for Chamber Music Performance, ENSEMBLE FOR THESE TIMES (E4TT) consists of award-winning soprano/Artistic Executive Director Nanette McGuinness, cellist Megan Chartier, pianist Margaret Halbig, and co-founder/ Senior Artistic Advisor composer David Garner. E4TT made its international debut in Berlin in 2012; was sponsored by the U.S. Embassy in Budapest for a four-city tour of Hungary in 2014; and performed at the Krakow Culture Festival in 2016 and 2022, and at the Conservatorio Teresa Berganza in Madrid in 2017. E4TT toured to the East Coast in 2026; in California, the group has performed at the Paderewski Festival, the LAMOTH, UCLA, and in venues throughout the SF Bay Area, including the German Consulate General, the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, Old First Concerts, JCC Peninsula, and Noontime Concerts.

E4TT’s six albums have all medaled in the Global Music Awards: El Tiempo Latine (2026), a double album of classical chamber music by nine of today’s Latine composers; Emigres & Exiles in Hollywood (2024) featuring music by some of the talented émigré composers who fled persecution during WWII for Hollywood, changing movie music as we know it; The Guernica Project (2022), commemorating the 85th anniversary of the horrific carpet bombing of civilians and Picasso’s masterwork in response; Once/Memory/Night: Paul Celan (2020), honoring the centennial of the seminal 20th-century poet; The Hungarians: From Rózsa to Justus (2018), with works by Hungarian émigré Miklós Rózsa, and three of his compatriots who perished in the Holocaust; and Surviving: Women’s Words, (2016), new music to poetry by women Holocaust survivors. Since 2022, E4TT has produced a weekly podcast of conversations with marginalized creative voices, “For Good Measure.”

 

ABOUT E4TT’S 19th BAY AREA HOME SEASON

 

“Home is where you hang your hat… Home is where the heart is… There’s no place like home.”

 

The concept of “Home” is crucial to the human experience and to our sense of belonging, and yet so many today are homeless, or even worse, are being “de-homed” daily. In recent years, E4TT has explored the themes of exile, immigration, and transitions in our concert programming. For our 19th Home season, with political discourse around “home” and “homeland” raging, we will delve into the flip side of these themes and topics, exploring what it means to feel at home, to long for home, to lose one’s home or, in some cases, to feel like a fish out of water and very much not at home through a new two-year initiative, “The HOME Project.” The season will consist of six concerts and five programs performed at various Bay Area concert venues and also livestreamed online. For self-presented concerts, the livestream will be free, with no one turned away from attending in person due to lack of funds. Programming for E4TT’s 2026/27 Home Season will be characterized by diversity, innovation, and collegiality as follows:

 

October 18 & 25, 2026: “Call for Scores: Solo Piano, Vol. 3”

Following her wildly successful Call for Scores solo piano and piano four-hands recitals with Ensemble for These Times in their 17th and 18th seasons, E4TT emerita pianist extraordinaire Dale Tsang will return to open E4TT’s 19th season with fourteen works chosen from the group’s third Call for Scores for solo piano, on both sides of the Bay. For this year’s Call for Scores the group received 155 scores from 89 composers hailing from 20 countries (Albania, Argentina, Australia, Austria, China, Cuba, Iran, Italy, Japan, Korea, Lebanon, Mexico, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Puerto Rico, South Korea, Taiwan, United States) and 19 U.S. states, with the composers ranging from students to established composers to professionals in non-musical fields, and chose 14 works by 13 composers: “Cogwork Rhapsody” (2026, California Premiere) by Jinjoo Choi (b. 1994), “Pulse” (2018, California Premiere) by Gilad Cohen (b. 1980), “Seville Rag” (2001, West Coast Premiere) by Michael Coleman (b. 1955), “Album Leaves - III. November 15, 2026: “Exile | Banishment | Home”

What does it mean to be home and not yet home? E4TT will explore this duality with From Jewish Folk Poetry, Op. 79 (1948) for soprano, mezzo-soprano, and piano by Dimitri Shostakovich (1906-1975) sung in the poetry’s original Yiddish language, and the World Premiere of Skazka (fairytale) for narrator, Pierrot ensemble, and percussion: Russian folktales reinterpreted and subverted by emerging composer Alexander Malinas (b. 2002), accompanied by images by Aria Nunez after Russian illustrator Ivan Bilibin. These works will be paired with the World Premiere of a new cello/piano duo by Bay Area composer Mary Bianco (b. 1939), “Unter dayne vayse shtern,” arr. for soprano and piano from “Vilna Poems” (2012) by E4TT cofounder and 2015 American Prize in Composition winner David Garner (b. 1954), “Armadura” (2022) for solo cello by GRAMMY® nominated, Spanish-American composer and cellist Andrea Casarrubios (b. 1988), and “Stories for my Mother” (2021) for mezzo-soprano by ASCAPM Morton Gould Young Composer Award winner Stella G. Gitelman Willoughby (b. 2000).

January 24, 2027: “Hollywood Exiles & Modern Noir”

Film noir meets E4TT’s much-loved “Émigrés & Exiles in Hollywood” series to kick off the new year in a program that pairs new tributes to film noir, by modern movie mavens Germaine Franco (Encanto) and Lars Deutsch (The Passenger), with music by four émigré composers, continuing our multi-year exploration of music by the many talented composers who fled Europe in the 1930s and 1940s for LA and are often credited with founding the sound we still hear today in movies. The concert will feature the World Premiere of “LA Noir: Devil’s Flight” for piano trio by two-time Emmy Award winner Lars Deutsch, and “The Mother Daughter Theme” (2023) arr. for piano trio by Grammy® Award winning composer Germaine Franco (b. 1988), alongside works by four talented emigre composers who fled WWII Toccata Capricciosa, Op. 36 (1977) for solo cello by Hungarian-American composer Miklós Rózsa (1907-1995), Verklaerte Nacht (Transfigured Night), Op. 4 (1899) by Austrian- American composer Arnold Schoenberg (1874-1951) arr. for piano trio by Eduard Steuermann (1892-1964), Románc (Romance) (1921) for cello and piano, as well as selected songs by Hungarian-American composer Eugene Zádor (1894-1977), and selections from “Four Pieces for Good Players” (1944) for solo piano by Austrian-American composer Erich Zeisl (1905-1959).

April 9, 2027: “HOME”

E4TT’s annual multimedia commissions concert and our seventh collaboration with the SF Conservatory of Music, “HOME,” will examine the meaning and concept of home. The highlight of E4TT’s 2026/27 season, the program will feature four World Premieres: three commissions by SFCM Composition Department students or alums – a duo for cello and piano by Max Marcus (b. 1998), a piano trio by Max Tafoya (b. 2003), a multimedia work for piano trio, narrator, and her own paintings by Zoe Yost (b. 2003) – and the winner of the E4TT/SFCM Composition Department multimedia student composition competition. As part of our exploration of “home,” the concert will also feature a visual montage of scenes of the U.S. set to four pre-existing responses to “America the Beautiful” for solo piano by diverse voices – “American Tableau” (2021) for solo piano by 2024 Copland House Residency Award recipient Tyson Gholston Davis (b. 2000), “America/Desh” (2020) for solo piano by Fulbright-Nehru grant recipient, Indian-American composer Reena Esmail (b. 1983), “Undiscovered: America the Beautiful” for solo piano by 2026 Grammy® Award winner Jake Heggie (b. 1961), and “America the Beautiful: ‘sotto voce’” for solo piano by Ilshin Composer Prize recipient, Korean-American composer Juri Seo (b. 1981) – with the program rounded out fittingly by “The Last Song” (2010) for cello and piano by Latin Grammy® nominee, Brazilian-American composer Clarice Assad (b. 1978).

May 15, 2027: “Inspiración: Music by Women and Nonbinary Composers”

E4TT will close our 19th Home Season with the eighth edition of our annual audience favorite – a concert of music by women and nonbinary composers. This program will feature the World Premieres of three new commissions by Luna Composition Lab alums as part of Luna Lab@10 – a piano trio by Ilaria Hawley (b. 2009), a duo for violin and cello by Peyton Neleson (b. 2007), and a piano trio by Èbùn Oguntola (b. 2005) – along with works by five established composers: “Fisherman’s Song” (1999) for violin and piano and “Romance and Dance of Hsaio and Ch'in” (2001) for cello and piano by 2006 Pulitzer Prize finalist, Chinese-American composer Chén Yí (b. 1953), Four Folk Songs (2012) for piano trio by Heinz Award in the Arts and Humanities recipient Gabriela Lena Frank (b. 1972), “Inspiración Huasteca” (2019) for piano trio by 2024 Vibrant Shores Prize winner Edna Alejandra Longoria (b. 1988), “Transitions” (2014) for solo cello by Composer-in-Residence at Bozar, Brussels and the Stavanger Symphony Orchestras, Anna Thorvaldsdottir (b. 1977), and ses yeux etaient dans les etoiles (“his eyes were in the stars”) (2009) for solo piano by award-winning, transgender Mexican-American composer Mari Esabel Valverde (b. 1987).

ABOUT THE 2026/27 SEASON’S ARTISTS

MELINDA BECKER is a vocalist whose New Mexican and Jewish heritage informs her artistic voice. Drawing on musical traditions in Spanish, Ladino, Yiddish, and a wide range of other languages, she brings an expressive, stylistically versatile approach to repertoire ranging from contemporary classical and baroque to mariachi, traditional and popular music. A passionate advocate for new music, Melinda has collaborated with composers and ensembles including Nicolás Lell Benavides, Friction Quartet, Brian Baumbusch, Emily Koh, and the Musical Art Quintet. In 2026, she will record Kanta Judezmo, a ten-movement oratorio in Ladino by Sascha Jacobsen, with the Musical Art Quintet. She also appears with Friction Quartet on Canto Caló, an album of music by Nicolás Lell Benavides released in 2025 on Aerocade Recordings. Melinda studied at Santa Clara University, the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, and the Conservatoire de Strasbourg in France. She further specialized in Spanish art song and chamber music through Project Canción Española at the Escuela Superior de Canto in Madrid and Música en Compostela in Santiago de Compostela, Spain.

ANI BUKUJIAN was born into a musical family and started playing the violin at the age of two and a half. A native of Los Angeles, she is the winner of numerous musical competitions and an AGBU scholarship recipient. Ani has collaborated with distinguished artists such as Kim Kashkashian, Ian Swensen, Dimitri Murrath and participated in masterclasses with teachers including Andres Cardenes, Aaron Rosand, Ruggiero Ricci, Abraham Shtern, Gerard Poulet, Dmitry Berlinsky, Ida Haendel and Pamela Frank among others. She holds both Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees from The Juilliard School where she studied with Lewis Kaplan and Laurie Smukler. She attended the San Francisco Conservatory where she studied with the concertmaster of the San Francisco Symphony, Alexander Barantschik. Ani is the Principal 2nd Violinist of the San Francisco Ballet Orchestra. She has also been recently appointed Marin Symphony’s new Concertmaster.

E4TT cellist MEGAN CHARTIER is “unafraid to display gutsy abandon,” as described by the South Florida Classical Review. She has performed internationally as a soloist, chamber musician and orchestral cellist. Current positions include Opera San Luis Obispo principal cellist, and Vallejo Symphony section cello, following positions as Astralis Chamber Ensemble core cellist and Miami Symphony Orchestra principal cellist; she has recently performed with the San Antonio Symphony, One Found Sound, Nu Deco Ensemble, and the Moscow Symphony Orchestra. Semi-finalist in the 2017 PRISMA Concerto Competition, she won 1st prize in the Ann Arbor Society of Musical Arts’ 2015 Young Artist Competition and 2015 Miami Music Festival Concerto Competition. With an undergraduate degree from Eastern Michigan University, and a Master’s from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Chartier is on faculty as Cello Lecturer at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo.

JESSICA FOLSON is a versatile and instinctive artist who performs all genres with ease and energy. As an active freelancer and teacher in the Bay Area, some of her recent career highlights include recording at Skywalker Studios with 3232 Productions, playing in the pit orchestra at SF Playhouse, collaborating with Grammy-award winning composer Kinan Azmeh, and playing at SF Jazz with Chris Potter. Jessica plays with many Bay Area orchestras including the Monterey Symphony, Stockton Symphony, Vallejo Symphony, and the California Symphony, and played with the Boise Philharmonic for their 2025-2026 season. She is a founding member of Mosaic Strings, a community-focused chamber ensemble. Jessica maintains an expanding private violin studio and is an orchestra coach at Sacred Heart Cathedral Preparatory. Jessica earned her Master’s degree at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, where she studied with Simon James. 

E4TT pianist MARGARET HALBIG is in high demand as a collaborative artist in both the instrumental and vocal fields. She is currently Associate Chair and Voice Coach Managing Supervisor of the Voice Department at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, where she frequently collaborates with faculty and student instrumentalists. During the summer, Halbig is on faculty at Taos Opera Institute in New Mexico and also teaches at the Vocal Academy at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. An advocate of new and contemporary music, she has been the pianist for the new music collective Wild Rumpus since its inception and frequently plays with the contemporary chamber group Earplay. Halbig earned her DMA from UC Santa Barbara under the tutelage of Robert Koenig and holds performance degrees from the University of Missouri, Kansas City Conservatory and University of Evansville, Indiana. 

Soprano CARINA KAHANE was born and raised in Queens, New York. She moved to San Francisco in 2019 to pursue a Master of Music in Voice and Opera at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and to study with Jane Randolph. Since graduating, she has sung with several Bay Area organizations, including performing in the workshop premiere of the new opera The Emissary with Opera Parallèle and appearing as the soprano soloist in Benjamin Britten’s A Ceremony of Carols. She is delighted to join Ensemble for These Times for this special performance.

Clarinetist ZOE KING has played with groups such as the Jacob Collier Audience Symphony Orchestra, San Francisco Symphony Youth Orchestra, and Bay Area Rainbow Symphony. King was a 2025 recipient of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music Honors Ensemble award as part of a clarinet and guitar chamber duo. She was also a 2025 recipient of the Berkeley Piano Club Emerging Artist Grant, and was selected to play at the winner’s recital. King also has extensive experience in jazz and popular styles of music. She is an alumni of the SF Jazz High School All Star Ensemble, and has performed in the annual Berkeley Choro Festival for the past 5 years. She is currently pursuing a degree in clarinet performance from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, where she studies with Carey Bell.

ALEXANDER MALINAS is a composer, pianist, concert producer, and educator located in the San Francisco Bay Area. Malinas takes artistic inspiration from his Russian Jewish heritage, incorporating Russian and Jewish Folk tropes into his music, as well as programming concerts of Jewish music. Malinas began playing piano at the age of 13 and by 19 decided to pursue composition at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, where he studied with David Garner. Malinas is the youngest recipient of the Highsmith award for his orchestral composition “Hear Her Sing”, which was performed by the SFCM orchestra in 2024. Malinas also received second prize in SFCM's 2026 Biennial Choral Composition Competition for his setting of “Simeni chaChotam” from Shir haShirim. Malinas was commissioned by the Bridge Players and Congregation Sha'ar Zahav for a piano trio, which premiered in April 2026.

Soprano and E4TT co-founder and Artistic Executive Director NANETTE MCGUINNESS has been hailed in the press for her "creamy golden tone" and "glorious soprano" across a repertory that ranges from 1600 to the present. A passionate advocate of music by living composers and women artists, she has performed operas, concerts, and recitals in 13 languages on two continents in over 25 operatic roles with the Silesian State (Czech Republic), Opera San Jose (Opera in the Schools), West Bay, Pacific Repertory, and Livermore Valley Opera, San Jose Symphony, Contra Costa Chorale, Monterey Peninsula Chorus, Solano Symphony, and Palo Alto Philharmonic, among many. She has been featured on nine albums with Centaur, Aerocade, and Yuggoth Records and her debut recording of music by 19th and 20th century women composers, Fabulous Femmes, was called “perfect for the song recital lover” by Chamber Music Magazine. McGuinness earned her doctorate from UC Berkeley and her undergraduate degree from Cornell University. 

TAYLOR ROBINSON is a flutist and a current student at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. Dedicated to both artistic expression and technical excellence, he enjoys exploring a diverse range of repertoire through solo, chamber, and orchestral performance. With a passion for connecting audiences and collaborating with fellow musicians, he continues to develop his craft while pursuing a lifelong passion and commitment to music. 

ARIA SHUM is a violinist and interdisciplinary artist based in San Francisco, California. As an avid musician and collaborator, she regularly performs in concerts and recitals, including premieres and recordings of new music. In addition to her regular performances, some memorable performances include concerts at the Washington National Cathedral, where she worked with conductors David Danzmayr and Marin Alsop. She has performed in masterclasses with renowned teachers and performers such as David Bowlin, Sibbi Bernhardsson, Kirsten Yon, Jennifer Ross, Marc Rovetti, and Stephen Rose. Aria previously studied with Sang Mee Lee at the Music Institute of Chicago, and is currently pursuing her Bachelor’s degree in violin performance under the instruction of Simon James at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music.

Pianist DALE TSANG earned her Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance from the University of Southern California, her MM from the University of Michigan, and her DMA from Rice University. She is a faculty member at Laney College, teaches an inspiring assortment of adult students, and serves as a competition adjudicator for a number of local and statewide piano competitions. A winner of numerous competitions and an active solo and chamber musician, she frequently performs locally and in Europe and Asia. As a core member of Ensemble for These Times, she championed 20th and 21st century music and collaborated in many commissions, premieres and international performances. She continues to enthusiastically disseminate the music of living composers.

Since graduating from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, EDDIE VIRTGAYM has enjoyed returning to a life of rock music, performing around San Francisco with his band Dream Arenas, as well as many other acts, in such venues as Bottom of the Hill and Rickshaw Stop. Not fully removing his foot from the orchestral door, he still enjoys performing the occasional concert with the San Francisco Symphony, Santa Rosa Symphony, One Found Sound, and others too. A great deal of time is also spent sharing the love of music with younger ones, helping kids at the Hamlin School and elsewhere gain confidence and passion through drumming. He also often records for many artists at his own Jekyll Studio.
