Young Émigré Composer Scores Winning Anthem for America’s 250th Anniversary in Just 18 Hours

June 30, 2026 | By Viktoriia Rozanova

Russian-Cypriot, Berklee graduate composer Konstantin Solopov has premiered his winning piece, The Republic, for Boston Public library's commission for their major state celebration of the upcoming 250th anniversary of the United States. The composer distilled the musical history of the U.S. — from melancholic country bluegrass to stadium grunge — into a tight three-minute composition.

The initiative is part of the broader America250 national celebrations, which aim to reimagine the nation's historical legacy through the lens of contemporary art.  Solopov beat out dozens of competitors to take the top prize.

Organizers set strict constraints for the participants: score a piece for exactly three instruments clocking in at under three minutes. The composition, fully orchestrated for piano, violin, and drums, was written from the ground up in an 18-hour creative sprint. The resulting three-minute track serves as a deep dive into American cultural identity.

The piece is rooted in the genres that historically shaped U.S. culture. The violin part channels the traditional sound of rural America, giving a nod to West Virginia fiddle music, authentic bluegrass, and folk motifs. The drums and piano serve as a direct callback to classic jazz — a homegrown genre that shifted global social culture. The final breakdown, packed with sharp, syncopated chords and heavy contrast, reflects the influence of American rock, channeling the raw energy of bands like Foo Fighters, Nirvana, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Led Zeppelin. The intensity of this section mirrors the high-octane drive of the cult film Whiplash.

Solopov has no plans to limit the piece to a chamber setup. His next move is to scale the track into a full-blown symphonic arrangement, orchestrating it for a 50-plus piece ensemble featuring a sweeping string section and an expanded percussion battery.

Today, Konstantin Solopov successfully works at the intersection of live instrumentation and interactive audio. A graduate of Berklee College of Music in Boston, he began his journey with classical training in Moscow and continued his studies in Cyprus, where he was already scoring large-scale theatrical productions as a teenager.

During his university time at Berklee in Boston, he scored indie films for Bostonian film makers, like At the Catch –   movie depicting rivalry of Harvard and Yale collegiate rowers, as well as international film makers from the UK, like The Clover – a psychological thriller, that comes out from a simple girls slumber party.

Solopov constantly looks for new competitions. In 2024 he was a semi-finalist in the Red Bull Scoring Challenge in which over 200 applicants tested their skills in capturing the feel of the Red Bull.

Lately it is Solopov’s work on gaming projects with developers at the University of Southern California (USC)  that most excites and fuels his brain as he tries to understand and predict the decision making of the player.
