Sovereign for Cello - Larsen Strings unveils 'Race Car Strings'
Larsen Strings presents Sovereign for Cello
A new standard in lower register power and control
Larsen Strings announces the release of Sovereign for Cello – a high-performance string set developed for cellists who demand greater authority, responsiveness and expressive control in their sound.
Created in close collaboration with leading international artists, Sovereign represents a decisive step towards a more commanding, soloistic voice, where clarity, projection and tonal depth work in complete balance.

Redefining the role of the lower register
At the heart of Sovereign lies a clear ambition: the lower strings should not merely support the instrument – they should shape its voice.
The newly engineered G and C strings, built on flexible steel cores and wound with dense tungsten, form a powerful tonal foundation that transforms the entire instrument. They deliver a sound that is immediate, focused and richly layered, combining depth and projection with remarkable clarity and speed of response.
This design brings a new level of articulation and presence to the lower register, allowing it to project with authority while remaining agile and responsive under the bow.
A C string that leads, not follows
Particular attention has been given to the C string, which emerges as a defining feature of the set.
With its fast, articulate attack and deep, resonant core, it responds instantly across the full dynamic range - from the lightest pianissimo to powerful, projecting fortissimo - without losing stability or tonal integrity.
International soloist Johannes Moser describes the experience:
“These are race car strings… strong, responsive and built to carry. The C string has the growl, warmth and attack I’ve been searching for – it’s a complete game changer.”
Together, the G and C strings create a lower register that is not only supportive, but definitive - driving the sound forward with clarity, colour and control.
A complete and flexible system
While the lower strings establish a powerful core, the full set is carefully balanced to ensure cohesion across all four strings. The upper strings bring warmth and focus, enabling seamless transitions and a consistent tonal identity from C to A.
Sovereign is also designed with versatility in mind. The G and C strings integrate effortlessly with all other Larsen A and D strings, offering players a straightforward way to enhance their lower register while maintaining familiar upper-string preferences.
“Sovereign creates a natural connection with the instrument, letting its true voice unfold in its full potential. The C String is incredibly responsive, giving the instrument space to breathe and fully resonate,” Larsen Artist and international soloist Nicolas Altstaedt explained.

Built for modern performance
Offered in a calibrated medium tension, Sovereign provides the ideal balance between stability and flexibility. The feel under the bow is secure yet responsive, allowing for both powerful projection and refined articulation in demanding repertoire.
The result is a string set that enables the player to shape every note with precision and intent - from bold, expressive gestures to the most subtle tonal nuances.
As cellist Michael Paternek put it: “The strings are fantastic! After a short playing-in period they respond beautifully even in pianissimo, and they are never “overwhelmed” when you apply a bit more pressure. Above all, they bring out that shimmering buzz in the cello that I love so much – but also its deep growl and raw character.”
Command your sound
With Sovereign for Cello, Larsen Strings introduces a new approach to tonal design - one where the lower register becomes the driving force behind projection, colour and control.
