Composer Joel Mandelbaum appoints violinist Chloë Dickens as music executor

New York, NY — Esteemed American composer Joel Mandelbaum has appointed British-born violinist Chloë Dickens, now based in New York City, as the executor of his musical estate. This living appointment marks a forward-looking collaboration to preserve, promote, and futureproof Mandelbaum’s legacy while he continues to compose and contribute to the field of contemporary music at age 93.

With a catalogue of over 100 compositions spanning opera, chamber works, vocal music and instrumental pieces, Mandelbaum is celebrated for his exploration of both traditional tonal writing and pioneering microtonal systems. A lifelong advocate for expanding the language of Western music, his works remain intellectually rigorous, emotionally resonant, and increasingly relevant in contemporary discourse.

Dickens will work closely with Mandelbaum to oversee the ongoing availability, interpretation, and programming of his works, acting as both steward and artistic liaison. Their collaboration began when Dickens led the premiere of his *Piano Trio* at LeFrak Concert Hall in Queens. Mandelbaum describes her as “uniquely qualified to interpret, preserve and advocate for my catalogue. Her insight into both traditional and alternative tuning systems, combined with her fluency in music technology, makes her perfectly placed to carry this work forward”.

Dickens, who recently premiered *Vox Feminarum* by Haitian-American composer Kervy Delcy at Carnegie Hall, is recognised for her commitment to new music and for amplifying underrepresented voices in the contemporary classical space.

“It’s an honour to be entrusted with Joel’s extraordinary catalogue,” said Dickens. “His music represents a rich, thoughtful, and courageous contribution to American composition. I’m looking forward to working with him to ensure his legacy continues to evolve and connect with new audiences.”

Her role will involve not only maintaining Mandelbaum’s archive, but also championing its performance and interpretation with the artistic integrity it deserves.
