Dr. Gary Ingle to Retire as Executive Director and CEO of Music Teachers National Association

July 24, 2023 | By Brian Shepard
Chief Operating Officer

At the June meeting of the MTNA Board of Directors, Dr. Gary Ingle, MTNA Executive Director and CEO, announced his intention to retire as the leader of the 146-year-old music teacher organization, effective June 30, 2024. Ingle, who has served at the helm of MTNA for the past 28 years, will work with the MTNA Board and its Search Committee over the next year to ensure a smooth transition of leadership for the association.

Dr. Ingle’s leadership of the association was transformative, both internally and externally. He led in the digital transformation of MTNA’s programs and services through the development of new opportunities based on technology, as well as the digital enhancement of existing programs. MTNA’s identity and reputation throughout the entire music community was expanded through strategic partnerships and personal engagements, which ultimately led to  the globalizing of MTNA’s products and services to better serve the increasingly international music teaching community.

“Working with and for the MTNA membership and its leaders for almost three decades has been the privilege of a lifetime,” said Ingle. “Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to work with some amazing individuals, both staff and volunteers. All of us together have built a great organization that is stronger now than it has ever been. I am beyond thankful for the opportunity to serve MTNA and the music teaching profession.”

MTNA President Dr. Peter Mack said, “Gary is a wonderful leader for MTNA. His wise and thoughtful leadership has enabled us to thrive in the good times as well as to weather the storms. Truly, someone in the right place at the right time!”

The MTNA Board of Directors will begin immediately a search for Ingle’s successor to lead the association. After the leadership transition is complete, Ingle plans to remain active in the music teaching profession, advocating the importance of the public-private partnership in a well-rounded music education.
