Mark Gitch, a member of the Search Committee and Associate Principal Second Violin said, “Given the positive reputation of the BSO and the outstanding regional arts scene, we were blessed with an abundance of well-qualified candidates from across the country. Our finalists represent a wide range of experiences and talents, and each will offer us opportunities to grow as an orchestra. We are excited to see these candidates up close next season and we look forward to selecting a Music Director with the musicianship and leadership to strengthen our position as a leading regional orchestra.”

The candidates are Cheung Chau, of Carlisle, Pennsylvania, Wesley Schulz of Austin, Texas, Jeffrey Stirling of St. Paul and Nobuyoshi Yasuda of Eau Claire. Each of these candidates will lead the BSO in one concert performance in the 2011-2012 season and the successful candidate will begin his appointment as Music Director and Conductor of the BSO in August 2012. Programs and dates for the 2011-2012 concert season will be announced at a later date.

"We’re very excited to work with these carefully selected candidates over the course of next year,” said Concertmaster and Search Committee member Rebecca Corruccini. “I look forward to the wonderful and unique variety our candidates will bring to next season."

“When this search began, members of the orchestra unequivocally stated a preference that a musician of the highest caliber be selected as the Bloomington Symphony Orchestra’s next Music Director,” BSO Board President Karl Peterson said. “Through their efforts and unwavering commitment to the membership’s preference, a unanimous vote of the board approving the finalists was possible.”

Cheung Chau is active as conductor and cellist. He holds directorship positions with the Central Pennsylvania Symphony, University of Connecticut Symphony and Sinfonietta Polonia. Praised as a conductor who creates “pastels landscapes of sounds”, Chau receives high praises from critics and audiences alike in the US, Europe and China. Dedicated to education and community outreach, Chau collaborates regularly with area artistic institutions, students in school ensembles and enjoys programming music that serve a diverse audience.

As a guest conductor Schulz has appeared with the Power River Symphony, Oregon East Symphony, ClarinetFest2010, San Francisco All-City Honors Orchestra and the Austin Chamber Music Center. Schulz was recently named winner along with his Texas Chamber Group of the 2010 American Prize in Orchestral Performance for their rendering of Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring.

Jeffrey Stirling came to the Twin Cities in 2001 after several years conducting and college teaching in the upper Midwest. Stirling received his training in the U.S. and Europe, including at the Tanglewood and Salzburg festivals, Yale and the Paris Conservatory. Locally Stirling has appeared with the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, been a cover conductor for the Minnesota Orchestra, directed the orchestral program at the University of Minnesota and conducted many community and youth orchestras.
