Since her acclaimed New York recital debut as a Concert Artist Guild award winner in 1978, harpsichordist ELAINE COMPARONE has maintained a varied career as recitalist, soloist with orchestra, chamber musician, organist and choir director, recording artist, impresaria, teacher, and collaborator with composers, choreographers and video artists. A former Fulbright Fellow and Affiliate Artist, she has taken her harpsichords to performances in every state of the continental United States. In France, Italy and England she has performed her unique interpretations of Scarlatti. In 1978 she founded Harpsichord Unlimited, a non-profit organization dedicated to stimulating interest in the harpsichord as a living, contemporary instrument. In 1992 she formed "The Queen's Chamber Band", modeled after the ensemble created by the "London Bach" for Queen Charlotte Sophia, wife of "Mad King George III. Her discography includes solo recordings of Scarlatti and Persichetti, operas by Alessandro Scarlatti and Gluck, and chamber music of J.S. Bach, Dowland, Handel, Rameau, Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven. Adelphi University recently appointed her Professor of Harpsichord.
NICKOLAI SHEIKOV began studying piano at age nine in his native Bulgaria. He trained professionally at the L. Pipkov National School of Music in Sofia. Having arrived in Boston in 1999, Nickolai continued his studies at New England Conservatory of Music. There, after recognizing his love for Baroque music, he turned his devotion entirely to the harpsichord, which he studied with John Gibbons. He also participated in a number of master clases in Europe and the U.S., with Gustav Leonardt, Menno van Delft and Jaap Schröder amongst others. From the beginning of his career, Sheikov has appeared with great success as soloist, chamber musician and continuo player. Following the 2009 inauguration solo recital at Boston's new concert series Music at First Church, the "Boston Musical Intelligencer" described him as "noteworthy" and "an excellent harpsichordist".
Elaine Comparone and Nickolai Sheikov met through the YouTube network, where both artists have a video presence. Upon viewing Sheikov's videos, Comparone invited him to join her in this collaborative project presented by Harpsichord Unlimited. This concert marks Nickolai Sheikov's New York City debut.
