Opera and Ballet in Cinema Come to Parrish Art Museum
The Parrish Art Museum is launching its partnership with Emerging Pictures and its Opera in Cinema series with a free screening on Sunday, May 2, at 2 pm, of Verdi’s "La Traviata," as performed at Teatro alla Scala in Milan, Italy in 2007. Productions to follow during the spring and summer include "Carmen," "Aida," "Swan Lake," "Simon Boccanegra," "Otello," "The Abduction from the Seraglio," "Rigoletto," and "Stravinsky and the Ballets Russes."
Emerging Pictures' Opera in Cinema series offers exclusive cinematic productions of new and recent masterpieces from such esteemed opera and ballet companies as the Salzburg Festival; Teatro alla Scala; Palau de les Arts Reina Sofia in Valencia, Spain; the Bolshoi Theatre; Teatro Communale di Bologna; Teatro la Fenice, Venice, and many others.
Beginning with "Carmen," scheduled for May 15 and 16, screenings will be held at the Museum Thursday evenings at 7:30 pm and Sunday afternoons at 2 pm. Tickets to filmed operas will be $20, $16 for Museum members. Tickets for recorded ballets are $15, $12 for Museum members. Tickets may be purchased online at parrishart.org or at the Museum’s information desk.
"La Traviata" is one of the most popular Italian operas of all time. The title means “the fallen woman” and refers to the heroine, Violetta Valery, a courtesan in nineteenth-century France. This production, filmed at La Scala in 2007, stars soprano Angela Gheorghiu in the title role and also features Ramon Vargas and Roberto Frontali.
Also from La Scala is the 2009 production of Bizet’s "Carmen." "Carmen" is one of the most popular works in the opera repertoire, featuring some of the most famous music in the canon. For this production, La Scala hand-picked some of the hottest new talent in the opera world, including Jonas Kaufmann, Erwin Schrott, Adriana Damato, and Anita Rachvelishvili.
The Bregenz Festival’s 2009 production of Verdi’s "Aida" will be presented May 27 at 7:30 pm and May 30 at 2 pm. This version is slightly unusual—the stage is floating in the middle of a lake, the costumes are a mix of contemporary (pink go-go dancer outfits and riot gear) and traditional (Egyptian high priest robes), there are risqué moments (chiseled men wearing only boxers), and the entire action takes place on what looks like a giant replica of the feet of the Statue of Liberty. Pair this quirky but visually stunning staging with Verdi’s classic music, and you have a fantastic night at the cinema.
The cultural programming—filmed opera and ballet—will continue throughout the year.
