On January 29th, Juventas New Music Ensemble kicks off the new year with Ryan Shannon: Center Stage, a special concert celebrating esteemed Boston violinist Ryan Shannon and his five seasons with Juventas. The performance will be broadcast live on YouTube, with CD-quality audio and high definition feeds from six video cameras. After the concert, violinist Ryan Shannon will host a post-concert reception on Zoom, where audience members can meet the musician and learn more about the music.
The program features music for solo violin by five contemporary American composers: Jessie Montgomery, Robert Honstein, Paul Wiancko, Andy Stein and John Corigliano. Collectively, these works illustrate the enormous breadth of today’s composers, with each piece offering a unique artistic voice and approach to the instrument.
Juventas originally planned for a hybrid evening that would include an in-person audience at the Multicultural Art Center in Cambridge. With the Omicron variant of COVID-19 peaking in Massachusetts, the ensemble pivoted to an all-virtual event, which will be broadcast from Futura Productions in Roslindale. “It’s the right thing to protect our community in this moment,'' says Artistic Director Oliver Caplan.“In this difficult month, I’m so glad we can offer audience members crystal clear, high-quality programming they can watch from home. The broadcast on YouTube will offer a better-than-front-row seat!”
Juventas has been a leader in virtual programming. Throughout the pandemic, it has been one of just a few ensembles in the United States offering virtual concerts live as they happen, instead of pre-recording them. “This allows the audience to experience the full thrill and authenticity of musical performance,” says Mr. Caplan. Juventas’s all-virtual 2020-21 season was viewed by more than 30,000 people in 45 U.S. States and 49 countries around the world.
In recognition of the challenging moment, Juventas is offering this concert completely free of charge, reflecting the ensemble’s belief that music should be easily accessible. “Music has an incredible capacity to heal,” says Mr. Caplan, “and we must not allow the hurdles posed by the pandemic to stop us from making art.”
