Vancouver Symphony Orchestra USA Presents Rimsky-Korsakov’s “Scheherazade” |
|
The great Catalán composer Montsalvatge’s thrilling concerto for harp featuring internationally celebrated harpist Cristina Montes Mateo, alongside one of Rimsky-Korsakov’s most popular works.
To open this program, the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra USA welcomes Spanish harpist Cristina Montes Mateo. She is featured in a challenging 20th-century piece, the “Concerto Capriccio” by the Catalan master Xavier Montsalvagte. After intermission, the orchestra presents Rimsky-Korsakov’s masterpiece, “Scheherazade.”
Writing for harp and orchestra is a challenge, requiring both knowledge of the technical aspects of the instrument, and a mastery of orchestral writing that will allow the solo part to balance with orchestra. Montsalvagte apparently considered his 1975 “Concerto Capriccio” to be one of his best works for this very reason.

New Music for Percussion, Piano, and Strings |
|
Legendary pianist Marilyn Nonken and master percussionist Jonathan Haas join forces for the world premiere of composer Steven Swartz’ latest piece, ‘When the horizon has a mind of its own.’ Scored for piano and percussion (vibraphone, almglocken, sizzle cymbal, and bass drum, one player), the work is divided into four main sections, separated by measured pauses. Each section evokes a different dynamic of sun, sea, horizon, and sky.
“I’m drawn to sonorities that emerge, separate, and form new groupings at a leisurely pace, like clouds drifting across the sky. And nothing highlights the atmosphere like a sunset. . . Over the past several months, I watched the sun set over various bodies of water (New York Harbor, Lake Superior, the Tyrrhenian Sea), and noticed something curious. While we tend to visualize the horizon as a simple thing – a crisp line dividing sea and sky – in actuality, it’s much more elusive and interesting. It changes by the moment. We can chase it, but neve |

A Tale of Love and Redemption: Handel’s Ariodante
Join Boston Baroque for a momentous season finale with Handel’s Ariodante, a Scottish tale of love’s triumph over betrayal. This marks Boston Baroque’s first-ever performance of this beloved opera, hailed as one of Handel’s most profound works.
Set against the backdrop of 18th-century Scotland, Ariodante tells a gripping story of passion, deception, and ultimate redemption. When a spurned lover devises a scheme to ruin the virtuous Ginevra, her life and reputation are thrown into turmoil. Only the courage and devotion of her true love, Ariodante, can restore hope and justice.
Handel’s luminous score shines with expressive arias, deeply moving ensembles, and even moments of spirited dance. Highlights include the poignant “Scherza infida” and the heartbreaking “Il mio crudel martoro,” which reveal the depth of Handel’s musical genius.
