Since its PCMF debut in 2022, the East Coast Chamber Orchestra has electrified audiences with heartfelt, joyously virtuosic performances. For the first concert in the 2025 Winter Warmer season, ECCO members offer a rich tapestry of chamber music from Eastern Europe showcasing the uniquely expressive sounds of string instruments, opening with an intricate piece for four violins that blends Polish folk influences with a modernist edge. Dedicated to Tchaikovsky, Anton Arensky’s quartet for two cellos, violin and viola pairs cosmopolitan sophistication with richly resonant motifs from the Russian Orthodox mass, creating a soulful elegy that ends with a sentimental flourish. Finally, Antonin Dvo?ák’s Quintet No. 2 (for string quartet and double bass) features rollicking Bohemian dance rhythms and broad sweeping melodies, radiating joy and a vibrant, earthy energy. The New York Times extols the East Coast Chamber Orchestra for “mixing the transparency and coherence of a string quartet with an orchestra’s warmth and heft,” praising their “luminous” performances and “sheer exuberance.” This evocative program centers around the surrealistic song cycle Les Illuminations by Benjamin Britten, for which ECCO will be joined by American tenor Nicholas Phan, described by the Boston Globe as “one of the world’s most remarkable singers.” The program also features William Grant Still’s Danzas de Panama, based on a collection of Panamanian folk tunes, and Hanna Benn’s introspective Where Springs Not Fail, weaving text and melody in an ethereal, meditative style. Finally, John Adams’ iconic Shaker Loops, a masterful musical “epiphany of physical and spiritual transcendence,” brings PCMF’s 2025 Winter Warmer season to a rapturous close. The 2025 festival begins with an exciting collaborative concert with TAK ensemble. Fantastyka (Ukrainian Sci-fi) will highlight Ukrainian contributions to the sci-fi literary genre and today’s hot-button discussions around technology and artificial intelligence.
Solomiya Moroz’s world premiere, a commission by UCMF, takes Volodymyr Vynnychenko’s classic sci-fi novel The Sun Machine as its starting point. According to the composer, “The book follows the story of a machine designed to make bread, a creation that initially seems poised to save humanity from hunger but as the story unfolds, it brings unforeseen consequences that paradoxically dooms humanity. The piece will take the ensemble on an odyssey where unexpected elements unfold.”
Ukrainian ideas will be placed in dialogue with other traditions as Moroz’s commission is paired with an abridged version of Taylor Brook’s Star Maker Fragments, based on British author Olaf Stapledon’s novel. Rounding out the program is a new arrangement by Leonid Hrabovs |

Spirituals with the Morgan State University Choir |
|
Few musical traditions exemplify the power of the human spirit like the African American spiritual. Standing distinct from gospel and with an educational and performance history dating to the 1870s, the spiritual endures as a timeless and achingly beautiful response to the horrors of enslavement. As true emissaries of the craft, the Morgan State University Choir have brought their signature astounding skill around the U.S. and the world for decades. Led by Dr. Eric Conway, a brilliant pianist in his own right, the choir brings downG the roof in every house they play, with a sensitive and deeply informed approach leading them along the way. |
