Ensemble for These Times (E4TT) will close the season with a concert celebrating works by modern Latina composers, being presented in collaboration with the San Francisco International Arts Festival. The program, titled “Mujeres Ahora” (“Women Now”), will include compositions by Heinz Award in the Arts and Humanities recipient Gabriela Lena Frank; Pulitzer Prize winner Tania León; Opera America Discovery Grant composer Carla Lucero; four-time Latin Grammy winner Claudia Montero (1962-2021); Greenfield Hermitage Prize winner Angélica Negrón; and National Institute of Fine Arts Belles Artes Gold Medal winner Gabriela Ortiz. E4TT soprano Nanette McGuinness and pianist Margaret Halbig will be joined by violinist Lylia Guion and cellist Vanessa Ruotolo on this program. Through a dynamic interplay of music and visual storytelling, the opera delves into Kertész’s artistic struggles and triumphs, guided by the voice of his wife, Elizabeth, whose influence shaped his journey even beyond her passing.
The performance features mezzo-soprano Devony Smith and baritone Christopher Dylan Herbert, conducted by Tyson Deaton and accompanied by pianist Jason Wirth in an adaptation of the full orchestral score.

Musica Viva ends its 2024 – 2025 season with Johannes Brahms’ Ein deutsches Requiem, which is one of the most imposing and profoundly moving musical statements in history. A work with personal significance to our Artistic Director, Alejandro Hernandez-Valdez, Brahms’ Requiem is the most humanistic and universal of all the works of its type. As a companion to the Requiem, Musica Viva NY presents the opening movement of Schubert’s Unfinished Symphony, which was a formative early influence in Alejandro’s life-journey.

LOUIS: A Silent Film with Live Musical Performance by Wynton Marsalis and Cecile Licad |

In this very special evening, jazz icon Wynton Marsalis joins renowned pianist Cecile Licad and with a 10-piece all-star jazz ensemble they perform the score to the film Louis. Featuring a score of primarily Marsalis’ own compositions, this silent film from 2010 is an homage to Louis Armstrong, Charlie Chaplin, and the birth of American music.
In Louis, 1907 New Orleans provides a backdrop of lust, blood, and magic for 6-year-old Louis as he navigates the colorful intricacies of life in the city. Cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason’s career and performances span the globe.
