MidAmerica Productions & Continuo Arts Foundation to Present Requiem for My Mother in Carnegie Hall, May 19, 2018
Stephen James Edwards’ iconic musical tribute to his mother, Requiem for My Mother, will be performed at Stern Auditorium/Perelman Stage at Carnegie Hall on Saturday, May 19, 2018, as the result of a collaboration between MidAmerica Productions and The Continuo Arts Foundation.
Requiem for My Mother is an 11-movement choral and orchestral work composed by Mr. Edwards to commemorate his mother’s influence on him, from his first music lessons as a child to his career as a professional film score composer. A new documentary about the work, produced by Mr. Edwards, aired on Mother’s Day 2017 on 400 PBS stations. The Continuo Arts CD recording of Requiem for My Mother has reached No. 3 on Billboard’s classical albums chart.
According to Peter Tiboris, MidAmerica Productions’ founder, General Director, and Music Director, “Nine movements of Requiem for My Mother were given their world premiere on MidAmerica’s Carnegie Hall concert series in 2006. Launching this work on our series, combined with the resulting PBS documentary broadcasts and the Billboard chart results are tributes to its impact and integrity.”
The documentary details the composition, production process, as well as the inaugural concert of the Continuo Arts Foundation. It chronicles a performance of the work at the Festival Pro Musica e Art Sacra in Rome and Vatican City in which Candace Wicke, the President, Executive Director, and Principal Conductor of the Continuo Arts Foundation, led Requiem for My Mother with a 160-voice chorus and a 50-member orchestra.
Candace Wicke is no stranger to MidAmerica Productions, having served as Conductor-in-Residence prior to founding Continuo Arts. Ms. Wicke said, “We are privileged and excited to collaborate with MidAmerica Productions on this very special concert, and I look forward to working with the outstanding directors and choristers invited to perform and experience this monumental work.”
Founded by the conductor Peter Tiboris in 1983, MidAmerica Productions has presented more than 1300 choral and instrumental concerts worldwide, including 1000 concerts in New York and 550 in Carnegie Hall – making MidAmerica the most prolific presenter of choral music concerts in Carnegie Hall’s history. During its 34 years, MidAmerica Productions has brought together conductors, soloists, and choral and instrumental ensembles from the U.S. and abroad to appear at New York’s top venues, including Stern Auditorium, Weill Recital Hall, and Zankel Hall at Carnegie Hall; and Alice Tully Hall and David Geffen Hall at Lincoln Center. Additionally, MidAmerica Productions has presented concerts in numerous U.S. cities and in countries throughout the world, including Greece, England, Austria, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Italy, France, and Russia. In 2012, the company founded MidAm International to produce its concerts abroad. During 2017, MidAmerica Productions produced it regular season of concerts in Carnegie Hall, and MidAm International presented concerts in Florence, Vienna, and Syros, Greece (as the 13th Annual Festival of the Aegean). In 2018, MidAmerica Productions and MidAm International will produce concerts in Carnegie Hall, Florence, Vienna, Syros, Paris, and Beijing.
