Stotsenberg International Classical Guitar Competition to Be Held at Pepperdine University
22 SEMI FINALISTS TO COMPETE FOR $20,000 IN CASH AND MERIT PRIZES
What: Stotsenberg International Classical Guitar Competition
When: June 4, 5, and 6, 1999
Where: Pepperdine University, 24255 Pacific Coast Hwy, Malibu, California
SANTA MONICA, CA, May 6, 1999 -- A group of twenty-two classical guitarists, widely regarded as among the world’s best, will take the stage at Pepperdine University in Malibu, CA. to compete for what may be the largest cash prize ever awarded in a competition of its kind -- $20,000. The third semi-annual Stotsenbeg International Classical Guitar Competition, a presitigous event, is named for and sponsored by noted Pepperdine benefactors Dorothy and Ed Stotsenberg of Malibu.
The 22 contenders, selected from a pool of 59 entrants, represent 14 countries. They will compete over a series of three days, June 4, 5 and 6. First prize is $10,000, coupled with a concert engagement during the 1999-2000 Stotsenberg Recital Series at Pepperdine; second prize is $5,000; third prize is $3,000; and fourth and fifth prizes each are $1,000.
A dedicated classical guitarist himself, Edward Stotsenberg’s story is as inspiring as it is unique. A successful CPA for clients such as legendary silent screen star Mary Pickford, Stotsenberg sold his firm in 1987, and at 72 years of age decided to take up the guitar. After learning that his private classical guitar teacher had just won 50 dollars in a competition, Stotsenberg determined to do something about the lack of recognition given to classical guitarists. Not long after that, the first Stotsenberg International Classical Guitar Competition took shape.
This year’s competition consists of four rounds of judging: the first, by tape, has already taken place to yield the 22 semi-finalists; two others in performance at Pepperdine’s Raitt Recital Hall on Friday, June 4, from 4:00-6:00 p.m. and 7:00-9:00 p.m. (22 performers), and Saturday, June 5, from 2:00-6:00 p.m. (10 performers); and the final round in Smothers Theatre on Sunday, June 6, from 7:00-11:00 p.m. (five performers).
The final round on June 6 is open to the public. Tickets, priced at $15, are available now by calling (310) 456-4522, by fax (310) 456-4556, or by calling TicketMaster at (213) 365-3500. The event is expected to be a sell-out. In 1997, 200 were turned away.
For more information, interested persons are asked to call the Pepperdine University Center for the Arts at (310) 456-4594.
