CHICAGO, IL – On Saturday, September 20, 2014, 7:30 pm, the Instituto Cervantes Chicago (31 W. Ohio Street, Chicago, IL) welcomes award-winning American classical guitarist (and Chicago native) Adam Levin, acclaimed for his “enviable technique” and "high musicianship which shines like a beacon through his performances" by Classical Guitar magazine. This performance will also be featured as part of the 2014 Chicago Latino Music Festival and Expo Chicago Art Week. Tickets are $15 General Admission/$10 for students 8-18 (with student ID at the door), available at http://adamlevinguitar.brownpapertickets.com.

Levin will present a program celebrating his major artistic collaboration with 30 of the new century's “Spanish Masters.” His program will include one world premiere and six US premieres of works dedicated to him by four generations of Spanish composers.

Following his performance of acclaimed composer Leonardo Balada’s Caprichos No. 8: Abstractions of Albèniz (premiered on 21st Century Spanish Guitar, Volume 1 on Naxos), Levin will present the world premiere of Balada’s newest work for solo guitar, Caprichos No. 11: Abstractions of Granados, also dedicated to Levin and inspired by the upcoming 2016 centennial of 19th century Spanish nationalist composer Enrique Granados. Also from the first volume, Levin will present "Handeliana" (Variations on a theme by G.F. Handel) by Ricardo Llorca.

The six US premieres featured on the program include: Tres Piezas para guitarra (Three Pieces for guitar) (2011) by Benet Casablancas (2013 winner of the Spain’s most prestigious prize in composition, the National Music Prize granted by the Spanish Ministry of Culture); "Interiores" (2010) by Jesús Torres, "Upon 21" (2010) by Jacobo Durán-Loriga, "El Hombre que Plantaba Árboles (The Man Who Planted Trees)… in memoriam Francisco Brito" (2010) by Laura Vega, "I’ve got you under my string" (2013) by Eduardo Soutullo. and "Orión" (2010) by Juan Manuel Ruiz.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Adam Levin has been praised by renowned American guitarist Eliot Fisk as a “virtuoso guitarist and a true 21st century renaissance man with the élan, intelligence, charm, tenacity and conviction to change the world.” While in residency in Spain from 2008-2011, Levin embarked on a major project to expand the repertoire through collaborations with thirty renowned contemporary Spanish composers. In 2012, production began on a four-volume solo CD series on the Naxos label and a companion publication with Brotons y Mercadal Edicions Musicals. In May, 2013, Naxos released "21st Century Spanish Guitar, Volume 1," featuring eight solo works by Eduardo Morales-Caso, Salvador Brotons, David Del Puerto, Carlos Cruz de Castro, Ricardo Llorca, Leonardo Balada, and Octavio Vazquez. The disc gathered rave reviews from major guitar critics in Classical Guitar, Soundboard, American Record Guide, and was selected as “Recording of the Year” by music critic Brian Reinhart of MusicWeb International, who wrote “one of the most important guitar series of the new century so far…history in the making.”

Levin’s debut album, "In the Beginning," was lauded as “absolutely thrilling…will dazzle and entertain at every possible opportunity” by Minor 7th Acoustic Guitar Music Reviews. His second album, "Music From Out of Time," featured world premiere solo and chamber recordings by contemporary Spanish composers. His 2011 solo recording on Verso Records, "Fuego de la Luna," showcased the complete guitar works of Eduardo Morales-Caso.
