Midwest Young Artists Summer Concert Review
This past Saturday, the 24th of July, the talented and hardworking students of the Midwest Young Artists Summer Music Festival performed two concerts at Carthage College in Kenosha, Wisconsin. By all accounts these concerts were a resounding success, and the students performed brilliantly.
The MYA summer Strings, Piano and Chamber Music Workshop performed in the morning to a group of proud parents and supporters. Midwest Young Artists offers the most comprehensive chamber music program in the area, and is home to over 60 chamber music groups during the normal season.
The evening concert showcased the larger performing groups from the MYA Summer Music Festival, with a fantastic array of recognizable pieces. The evening concert included the Evening Wind Symphony (Tom Beckwith, conductor), Sinfonietta (Robert Bassill, conductor), Summer Jazz Ensemble (Jarrard Harris, director), Summer Big Band (Jarrard Harris, director) and Festival Orchestra (Karina Canellakis, conductor).
The audience admired the fine renditions of such pieces as Handel's Water Music (Evening Wind Symphony), Rossini's Barber of Seville (Sinfonietta), Dean Sorenson's Midnight Mambo (Summer Jazz Ensemble), Miles Davis' Milestones (Summer Big Band) and Schubert's Overature to Rosamunde (Festival Orchestra), to name just a few.
Founded in 1993, Highwood-based Midwest Young Artists is a non-profit organization that offers eight youth orchestras, more than 60 chamber music ensembles, four choral groups, an all-inclusive jazz program, a wind symphony, an early childhood education program and classes in music theory and history. MYA is the largest and most comprehensive youth music education and performance center in the Midwest.
