Tokyo Symphony Performs in Dalian, China
TOKYO - Tokyo Symphony Music Director Hubert Soudant will lead the orchestra in a performance in Dalian, China, on July 27. It will be his first international performance with the orchestra, and The Tokyo Symphony will be the first Japanese orchestra to perform in Dalian. The concert is part of the Dalian Summer International Festival, July 20 - 30, 2010.
This will be the Tokyo Symphony's third visit to China: The orchestra visited Beijing and Shanghai in 1986, on the occasion of its 40th anniversary, and returned to Beijing in 2006 to mark its 60th anniversary.
The program for the concert in Dalian will include Schubert's Unfinished Symphony and Brahms' Symphony No.1, works which the orchestra under Mr. Soudant's direction has performed to acclaim.
"I look forward with great anticipation to my first international performance with The Tokyo Symphony," said Music Director Hubert Soudant. "I am honored and excited to share with the Dalian audience the fruits of my partnership with the superb Tokyo Symphony musicians. We will be performing masterpieces by two great composers. I hope our performance will enrich the audience's musical experience."

Hubert Soudant, honored by the city of Salzburg for his outstanding achievement "The Ring of the city of Salzburg" and "Golden Cross of Honor" from the region of Salzburg, lead the the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra to won "Best Concert Performance by Japanese Artist" at the 21st Music Pen Club Japan Awards In March 2009, which was given for the Schubert cycle during the 2008-09 season. His latest CD with the Orhcestra, Bruckner's 7th Symphony won again the Best CD by Japanese Artist at the 22nd Music Pen Club Awards in March 2010.
Hubert Soudant was the Music Director of Radio France Nouvelle Orchestra Philharmonique, Utrecht Symphony Orchestra, l'Orchestra Toscanini of Parma, Orchestra National des Pays de la Loire and the last 13 years for Mozarteum Orchestra of Salzburg. Since September. 2004, he has been Music Director of the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra.
In 2006, he conducted "Don Giovanni" with Franco Zeffirelli as director. In April/May 2006, at New National Theater in Tokyo he conducted successfully "Titus" which was selected to be the best opera performance of the year. At la Fenice in 2007, Hubert Soudant conducted "Erwartung" and had success with ovation.
Born in Maastricht, 1946. Hubert Soudant conducts the most prestigious European orchestras such as, Berliner Philharmoniker, the London Philharmonic Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra, the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra, the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, Munich Philharmonic, Sydney Symphony Orchestra, National Orchestra of Paris and the great part of the Italian orchestras, like Orchestra of Scala Milan, Santa Cecilia in Rome and many others.
About the Tokyo Symphony
The Tokyo Symphony Orchestra (TSO) has been at the forefront of the orchestral world ever since its founding in 1946. The TSO engages the following conductors: Music Director, Hubert SOUDANT; Laureate Conductor, Kazuyoshi Akiyama, following his historic forty-year tenure as TSO's Music Director; Permanent Conductor, Naoto Otomo; Resident Conductor, Norichika Iimori; and Guest Principal Conductor, Nicola Luisotti. Arvid Jasons, Masashi Ueda, and Shinji Toyama are Permanent Honorary Conductors.
In March 2009, Music Director Hubert Soudant and The Tokyo Symphony Orchestra won "the Best Concert Performance by Japanese Artist" at the 21st Music Pen Club Japan Awards, which was given for its Schubert cycle during the 2008-09 season. The TSO's performance of the cycle was highly praised as "the musical highlight of 2008" and as "an exceptionally well-balanced performance" by numerous newspapers and magazines.
The TSO's latest recording, Bruckner's Symphony No.7, released in the fall of 2009 has been highly acclaimed and won the Best CD by Japanese Artist at the 22nd Music Pen Club Japan Awards.
Its many achievements include giving the premiere performances of many works by Japanese composers. Well over two hundred compositions were first performed by the orchestra. In recognition of its achievement in providing a forum for the debut of contemporary works, the TSO received the Mainichi Music Award in 1952 and the Minister of Education Award in 1954. Since 1996 the TSO has been supported as a leading orchestra in Japan under the 'Art Plan 21' of the Agency for Culture Affairs of Japan. Concert series of the TSO include Suntory subscription series, Kawasaki subscription series, Tokyo Opera City series. The TSO has been regularly performing various operas and ballets at the New National Opera Theatre since its opening in 1997.
As well, the TSO enthusiastically gives educational concerts for children, called Orchestra Experience from Age Zero and, in collaboration with Suntory Hall, Kodomo Teiki Ensokai ("subscription concerts for kids"). Both the TSO's novel ideas and performances of those concerts are drawing attention in various fields.
