Orpheus Chamber Orchestra Announces New Commissioning Project
New York, NY -- The Grammy Award-winning Orpheus Chamber Orchestra is partnering with radio station WQXR to introduce Project 440, an innovative new commissioning program. Project 440 is designed to provide exposure to composers who have not yet received broad recognition and will culminate in the commissioning of four new works, to be premiered as part of the orchestra's five-concert Carnegie Hall subscription series in the 2011-2012 season. In keeping with Orpheus' tradition of fostering creativity across diverse musical styles in a transparent and inviting fashion, Project 440 will be fully documented through the WQXR website in order to involve the public in the development of new works for chamber orchestra. Orpheus occupies a unique position amongst fellow ensembles for its democratic organization, and Project 440 offers fans and fellow musicians all over the world the chance to participate in this process as well by engaging in open dialogue about contemporary music and the commissioning process in general. A full description of the selection process, the most recent updates regarding Project 440 and the feedback and listening platforms are available here.
Members of the Nominating Panel and Selection Committee for Project 440 include esteemed figures such as composers Michael Gordon, Fred Lerdahl, and Christopher Theofanidis, WNYC and WQXR producers Limor Tomer, Terrance McKnight, and John Schaefer, Alarm Will Sound artistic director Alan Pierson, and Orpheus members Eric Bartlett, Maureen Gallagher and Renee Jolles. Each piece will be featured individually on Orpheus' regular series at Carnegie Hall, on tour throughout the United States, as part of a live broadcast on WQXR and as a streaming download on the WQXR website.
