New York Philharmonic Lectures by Joelle Wallach on June 10, 11, 12 and 15

Composer Joelle Wallach will be giving five New York Philharmonic Pre-Concert Lectures at Avery Fisher Hall in Lincoln Center on Thursday, June 10 at 6:30 PM, Friday, June 11 at 1:00 PM, and Saturday, June 12 at both 1:00 PM and 7:00 PM, and Tuesday, June 15, again at 6:30 PM.
For the June 10, 11, 12 (7 PM) and 15 lectures, Ms. Wallach will speak about the music of Brahms, Sibelius and Philharmonic Composer-in-residence Magnus Lindberg. These will precede performances by the orchestra and it’s Music Director Alan Gilbert of Brahms’ Symphony No. 2, Sibelius’ Violin Concerto with soloist Lisa Batiashvili and Lindberg’s Arena.
The Saturday, June 12 -1:00 PM lecture will center exclusively on the music of Brahms and will precede a performance by the orchestra and Mr. Gilbert of Brahms’ Symphony No. 2 and String Sextet No.2, op. 36.

Joelle Wallach composes music for orchestra, chamber ensembles, solo voices and choruses. Her String Quartet 1995 was the American Composers Alliance nominee for the 1997 Pulitzer Prize in Music. The New York Philharmonic Ensembles premiered her octet, From the Forest of Chimneys, written to celebrate their 10th anniversary; and the New York Choral Society commissioned her secular oratorio, Toward a Time of Renewal, for 200 voices and orchestra to commemorate their 35th Anniversary Season in Carnegie Hall. Wallach’s early training in piano, voice, theory, bassoon and violin included study at the Juilliard Preparatory Division. In 1984 the Manhattan School of Music, where she studied with John Corigliano, granted her its first doctorate in composition.
