McGibbon to Mackenzie - Great Scottish Composers

June 1, 2010 | By Feargus Hetherington
In 18th Century Scotland, some key figures in music such as violinist/composer William McGibbon were setting Scots melodies and composing original works with an awareness of the European art-music styles of the day, thereby introducing a unique blend of influences to Scottish music at that time. Some of these settings even inspired 19th Century composers, who used these themes in large scale compositions of symphonic proportions. Feargus’s programme will include William McGibbon’s (c.1690-1756) setting of ‘There’s Three Good Fellows Ayont yon Glen’ which was the inspiration for Sir Alexander Campbell Mackenzie’s (1847 – 1935) Pibroch Suite op. 42 – Caprice. During Feargus’s research on these periods in Scottish musical history, the figures who played key roles and the connections between sources, settings and masterpieces, he acquired a copy of a rarely played, never recorded piece, A Highland Ballad op.47 no.1, written by Mackenzie in 1893 for the violinist Pablo de Sarasate.
