VAI Releases Historic Telecasts from the Salzburg Festival

May 25, 2010 | By Allan Altman, Ernest Gilbert
Under an exclusive arrangement with Austrian Television (ORF), Video Artists International is releasing a series of three historic telecasts from the Salzburg Festival. The DVDs are: Le Nozze di Figaro (“The Marriage of Figaro”), Die Zauberflöte (“The Magic Flute”), and Die Entführung aus dem Serail (“The Abduction from the Seraglio”). They will be marketed internationally though VAI’s distribution network.

The orchestra of the Salzburg Festival – the renowned Vienna Philharmonic – is led in these releases by maestri Lorin Maazel, István Kertész, and Zubin Mehta. The illustrious singers include Luigi Alva, Walter Berry, Fernando Corena, Geraint Evans, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Reri Grist, Hilde Güden, Evelyn Lear, Pilar Lorengar, Roberta Peters, Lucia Popp, Paul Schöffler, and Graziella Sciutti.

The productions were staged by three legendary directors. The earliest of the telecasts is Gustav Rudolf Sellner’s The Marriage of Figaro (1963), a model production that is fresh, witty, and honest, and devoid of ostentation. Otto Schenk’s production of The Magic Flute (1964) beautifully captures both the fairy-tale and touchingly human qualities of the work. And, according to Salzburg archivist Gottfried Kraus, Giorgio Strehler’s “brilliant production” of Die Entführung (1967) elevated public opinion about the opera itself, and “allowed the audience to experience The Abduction from the Seraglio as a legitimate sister of The Marriage of Figaro or Così fan tutte.” In keeping with the Salzburg tradition, these performances all demonstrate the spirit of ensemble that is an essential ingredient in Mozart’s operas.

Optional subtitles are in English, French, German, Italian, and Spanish.
