Cantata Singers Announces 2010-11 Season Honoring Ralph Vaughan Williams

May 24, 2010 | By AMT PR
Boston, MA (May 24, 2010)—Cantata Singers, one of the nation’s leading musical organizations committed to performing and commissioning choral-orchestral works, announces its 2010-2011 season – a year-long exploration of one of England’s greatest composers, Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958). Continuing with its compelling single composer-focused seasons – Kurt Weill, Benjamin Britten and, most recently, Heinrich Schütz – Cantata Singers will highlight Vaughan Williams’ powerful and more rarely heard works for a cappella chorus, chorus and orchestra, and orchestra. Vaughan Williams’ works to be performed throughout this season’s seven concerts include: Three Shakespeare Songs; Flos Campi with violist William Frampton; the one-act opera Riders to the Sea; Oboe Concerto with oboist Peggy Pearson; Mass in G Minor; and a wide array of songs and vocal chamber music. Surrounding and complementing Vaughan Williams’ works will be music by composers with whom he shows great kinship – Englishmen Gustav Holst, Edward Elgar and William Harris, and Americans Irving Fine, Andrew Imbrie and Charles Ives. A particular highlight of the season will be Cantata Singers’ 12th commissioned work - the premiere of a new composition for chorus and orchestra by Pulitzer Prize-winner Yehudi Wyner. As well, in preparation for its upcoming 50th anniversary season, Cantata Singers will present two performances of J.S. Bach’s Mass in B Minor.

Under the direction of Music Director and Conductor David Hoose, Cantata Singers follows a remarkable 2009-2010 year dedicated to the music of 17th-century composer Heinrich Schütz. The Boston Globe cited one of the season’s concerts as “…one of the most skillfully constructed programs in recent memory,” and the Berkshire Review spoke of the ensemble’s performance as “founded on clarity, clean articulation, expressive phrasing, a rich and beautiful sound, and unwavering concentration on the musical and spiritual values of the composers,” and called it “magnificent, with the fine orchestra…underpinning the gorgeous voices….The audience knew it had heard something special.”

Ralph Vaughan Williams was one of the leading English composers of his generation, and one of the most beloved of all 20th century composers. Although he excelled in many genres, Vaughan Williams made a substantial contribution to English choral and vocal repertoire, and was one of the most responsive and perceptive composers to have set English poetry. In a broad and extensive career, he composed music notable for its deep connection not only to poetry, but also to the land and to the powerful emotions of the day – the essence of 'Englishness.'
