Internationally renowned American pianist Joshua Pierce will be in concert as part of the American Festival of Microtonal Music (AFMM) MicroNYC 2010 concert on Saturday, May 15 – 8 PM at Church of St. Luke in the Fields, at 487 Hudson Street in Manhattan’s Greenwich Village.

Mr. Pierce will be featured in Rami Seo’s Nexus, performing on the Terpstra synthesizer along with bassoonist Johnny Reinhard, cellist Madeleine Shapiro, and the composer on the 25-string Gayageum, a traditional Korean zither-like instrument. The Terpstra synthesizer, a honeycomb keyboard design of 55 tones per octave over 5 octaves, is heard publicly in its debut on this concert. Mr. Pierce will also present a 53-tone equal temperament rendition of Arnold Schoenberg’s Drei Klavierstucke, as imagined by the composer.

Other works on the program are cellist Madeleine Shapiro presenting Ge Gan-Ru‘s Yi-Feng (Lost Style) for solo amplified cello scordatura, 10-year old twin Gayageum players Sarah and Stephanie Yoon presenting the traditional Korean standard Sanjo on their 12-string instruments in its ancient microtonal tuning and Sasha Bogdanowitsch premiering Silk for instrumental ensemble, joined by the Yoons. There will also be a rare performance of Renaissance microtonalist Nicola Vicentino’s Musica Prisca Caput for SATB vocal quartet (Svjetlana Bukvich-Nichols, Maya Galt, Brendan Glynn, and Johnny Reinhard) and Reinhard concluding the evening with the Premiere of Cambia for bassoon and 3 Gayageums.

General admission to the May 15 concert is $12, $10 for seniors and students (with ID) at the door. For more information, call AFMM at 212-517-3550 or visit http://www.afmm.org/.

The American Festival of Microtonal Music, Inc. (AFMM) was founded by Johnny Reinhard to showcase past and contemporary microtonal music and to introduce microtonality to the listening public. Through his direction of the AFMM and his other individual efforts, Reinhard has almost singlehandedly revived public awareness of microtonality in the 1990's. AFMM has become a leader in new music activity today.
